Headphone jack on Thinkpad T420 doesn't work

I haven't ruled out that it could be a hardware issue, as the Thinkpad is a refurb and there are a few anomalies. But I like to blame software first because wild goose chases are more fun.

With Pulseaudio running or not, audio doesn't switch to the headphone jack when they're plugged in. Pulseaudio reports that the headphones are "unplugged" and when running pure alsa, I unmuted te headphones in alsamixer and turned down the speakers - nothing.

I've googled around a bit and found various solutions to almost related problems and not a single one does the trick. I'm at a complete loss after working at this for a few weeks. Also, I discovered that the headphone jack didn't work when I tried to listen to Alice Cooper in a fairly busy library. My fellow students were not pleased with me, but that said we are English so they didn't actually do anything about it except tell everyone at the pub how I ruined their day.

So, yeah. I'm at a total loss and I don't want to end up annoying anyone again. Does anyone have any suggestions?
