When I mute the Master channel in ALSA, it also mutes the Headphone (or Speaker, if that's what I'm playing it on) channel, but when I unmute Master, the other channel remains muted and I can't hear sound out of it. This happens in both Alsamixer and Volumeicon. Changing the "Auto-mute" setting in Alsamixer does not do anything to fix the problem.
I'm using Realtek ALC272, according to Alsamixer.

Had the same thing on my laptop as well. Fixed it by setting default output using "pavucontrol" and making pulseaudio "the main center" instead of ALSA. I don't remember what I have done step by step.. I have explained at the wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ASUS_N550JV#Audio ![]()
P.S. Keep in mind that you are probably using different machine and some commands won't work on your system.

I prefer not to use Pulseaudio, because it doesn't work very well with Volumeicon, and does not handle playing audio from mocp and other applications at the same time very well.
I've tried everything in that post, but it seems to be hit or miss. Sometimes the problem randomly fixes itself, but most of the time it still happens.

This literally can be solved. In my xfce system volume icon didn't work as well until I set it to "Playback: Built-in Audio Analog Stereo (PulseAudio Mixer)" and to mixer track "Master". Now it's absolutelly fine.
Well, that's it to me, told you all I know ![]()
