Can only play YouTube videos 360p in Firefox (without Flash)

I just re-installed Arch Linux and I'm loving the clean setup.

I installed Firefox and the `npapi-vlc-git` package from the AUR, and it's working great.

I've just come across one problem which is that all the YouTube videos I visit don't play in anything other than 360p, and I cannot change that, there is no other format offered by the HTML5 player.

I'm not sure what the issue is so I also don't know how to approach solving this problem. Has anyone stumbled across this problem before?

Thanks for your help. smile

Can you provide a youtube link which should be using above 360p but doesn't according to you?

Actually I don't want to use aove 360p, I want to use below because my internet sucks.

This is one video: http://youtu.be/pdwiwuLVzaE

That video isn't anything special though, I can't watch _any_ video with a quality other than 360p, I've tested over 10 videos, old and new.

The video is available in 720p, 360p and auto.

Hmm... What info would help debug this issue? I don't even get the 720p, although I don't care too much for the HD qualities.

I'm not using npapi-vlc-git.

I'm assuming, no plugin like that and just Firefox's default HTML5 capabilities.

Re: Can only play YouTube videos 360p in Firefox (without Flash)

Yes, I see the same as you. 360p and 720p without any plugins and pure HTML5.
Anyway, I tried installing

flashplugin

from the official repository and I got the same results as in Chromium -> all resolutions, from Auto to 1080p.

EDIT: I had chromium-pepper-flash installed so I made a test removing it. Without the pepper flash, I still have all the resolutions. My conclusion is that it's Firefox's fault.

EDIT #2: http://www.ghacks.net/2014/07/30/play-1 … e-firefox/

EDIT #3: Actually EDIT #2 didn't help much. Here's what I did and it worked out as a workaround: http://www.ghacks.net/2014/07/25/enable … right-now/
Keep in mind that both workarounds in #2 and #3 have to be done for it to work.

EDIT #4: After doing these things, I experience weird bugs, freezing while playing after the first 4-5 seconds.

Re: Can only play YouTube videos 360p in Firefox (without Flash)

Firefox doesn't support Media Source Extensions and VP9 yet. They are required for DASH to work. Youtube supports all video resolutions only for DASH streams. If the browser is not DASH capable, Youtube falls back to the old way of streaming for which they dropped most resolutions to save space on their servers.

I see. That is very useful information everyone. Thank you very much! smile

I will see if I can find an alternative that isn't `flashplugin`, in the mean while at least I understand the problem now. Thank you. smile

Go into about: config, and make sure media.mediasource.enabled is true, and media.mediasource.webm.enabled is true.

Yes, I have the same problem, but i solve it by enable these function (about:config) below::
media.mediasource.enabled
media.mediasource.youtubeonly
media.mediasource.mp4.enabled
media.mediasource.webm.enabled
media.fragmented-mp4.exposed
media.fragmented-mp4.ffmpeg.enabled

that video is available in much more broad selection of resolutions: http://i.imgur.com/3AnjzCM.png

Obligatory question, what does your http://www.youtube.com/html5 show?

YOu might also try setting media.fragmented-mp4.gmp.enabled;true
