LAN games with WINE

I'm preparing for another small (<5 people) LAN party and we're getting desperate to find some more decent games.

What worked for us the last few times:

  • Unreal Tournament

  • Quake 3

  • Rune (with Bot Mod)

  • Counter Strike 1.6

  • Half Life Deathmatch (No Bots)

As you can probably tell from the list above we rather prefer the classics over current/modern games.

We're planning to test Age of Empires 2 (just read about the direct play fix), Warcraft 3, Flatout 2 and some Command & Conquer.. but no clue how well they work

I'm aware of winehq, but it's a pain in the a*se as you can't filter for LAN games..

We're grateful for any suggestion.

Re: LAN games with WINE

Im pretty sure the first Starcraft works over LAN, its also rated as gold under the AppDB. If you've never tried it you may like it, Its also an RTS like Warcraft 3 (which is also Gold under Wine), Age of Empires, etc.

Have you tried PlayOnLinux? I think you'll need DirectPlay for Age of Empires...

UNIX is basically a simple operating system, but you have to be a genius to understand the simplicity.

Haven't tried playonlinux yet..
and yes, I've figured that with winetricks directplay you can add directplay support to wine!

Re: LAN games with WINE

I am always playing AoE2 (Classic) against my friends who use windows. It works flawless with the directplay fix. (Just a little bit slower then native windows)
