[Solved] fdisk or parted partition type 0C on gpt? (use EF00)

dear arch experts---I am trying to bootstrap myself.  I want to use gpt and two 8GB partitions on a vmdk.  I want the first to be fat32 (vfat) and the second to be ext4.  the first should be marked boot, too.  any UEFI bios should be able to boot from this configuration.

with the new fdisk, I use "g" and then "n".  alas, it does not prompt me for the type.  this used to be 0C.  the "t" type command for fdisk is scrolling by too fast for me to see it all, but 0C only tells me that the partition is unchanged.  other partition types still work.

how is one supposed to change the partition type and make it bootable?

What about using gdisk or cfdisk, instead?
And don't forget to commit the changes by issuing w before exit the program.

My advice is to ditch (c)fdisk and switch to (c)gdisk. I think that gdisk is a bit more friendly once you learn the commands.

ok, gdisk and cgdisk: better.  the partition types do not scroll by.

alas, they now show 2-byte partition id's, and they seem to be completely different from the 1-byte ids I am used to (30 years of history).

what should one use for a fat32 (vfat) boot partition on gpt?

[for system partition, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Un … _Partition recommends EF00 .  maybe this is it now??]

You already read about. The answer is that you wrote. Especially for UEFI.
If your BIOS boots with UEFI option, then you should find many related posts.
