It's what came on my Nokia 770. I don't know why anyone would want to use it on a regular desktop, though.

Dude, tell me about your Nokia 770, I've been investigating them... is it responsive? Would it be any good for say, development? 250MHz CPU... seems a little low to me, but of course such numbers are meaningless.

allucid i plan on using matchbox on my "desktop" (sony vaio vgn-u750p) because of the screen size. its only 5in. I also installed maemo on it but it sucks. The menus were messed up. And it didn't come with any apps. I only found a few arm apps, but i didn't want to setup qemu to emulate them. I'm sure the real thing is much better though. Also my system is anything but slow, 1.1ghz with 512mb ram. It just lacks in screen size. Right now i'm using xgl and compiz on it fine.

Sorry, I have been browsing but forgot to check my past posts for responses.

I like the device a lot. I use it primarily for web browsing and reading documents. I also have ssh set up on it incase I ever need it but I haven't had to use it yet. To really be able to customize it and get good use out of it, you will have to hack it a bit because it's setup for mass consumption (read: non-linux users).

That being said, a lot of people have problems with the device. Some report it randomly reboots when under load or the opera mini browser will crash on occasion. I have not had any of these issues. My requirements are pretty minimal and I haven't even had to upgrade the MMC card like everyone else does.

It's not easy to input text quickly but I don't use it for editing so I don't really mind. You can get an bluetooth keyboard (they are expensive) if you really need to. The USB port sucks (it's a host port -- the smaller type) so you can't stick a usb key into it or do most anything else useful with it. The CPU isn't really a issue but you can't have too many apps open at once without extending the swap space. There is a dedicated DSP, which helps, but it's not exactly speedy. Memory and response issues are supposed to be alleviated in future software/firmware releases.

I suggest going to CompUSA (or any other retailer carrying them) and play with it for a few minutes before you buy it.
