Trouble logging in after installing cdm

Hey - I'm new here, this may be a silly question! I'm trying to install Arch on my Macbook 5.1 and everything has run fairly smoothly up until now.

I used yaourt to install cdm and rebooted to find that when I tried to login I got a message about a timeout waiting for consolekit. Logging in as root gave me an nvidia splash followed by a black screen and (seemingly) unresponsive keyboard - I couldn't even blindly kill x or logout.

After some research I decided that I needed to stop using consolekit for x session. So I booted my installation media, did a chroot into my arch partition and edited the /etc/cdmrc file appropriately.

Now when I try to login I just get sent back to the login prompt. What am I doing wrong?
