[Solved] Cannot boot to new SSD

I just installed the new SSD I got for Christmas. Everything has gone remarkably well, except that my system is still booting to the HDD. I ran grub-install to the new SSD, then I ran grub-mkconfig pointing the -o to /mnt/sdc2/boot/grub/grub.cfg. But, as I said, the system still boots to the old Arch system os /dev/sda2

How do I get the system to boot to the grub on drive sdc? Do I need to do something to remove grub from sda2?

Tim

Re: [Solved] Cannot boot to new SSD

Oops. I am in the Arch system on HDD and trying to see what is happening. Even though I migrated all my root filesystem to the SDD on /dev/sdc2. it seems that there is nothing at all stored there, anymore. So, right now, I am confused and lost. sad

The data was definitely there before I rebooted, because I edited the fstab there and the grub-install and grub-mkconfig ran successfully to it. Now, the filesystem is still there, it is still mountable, but it appears to be completely empty.

Re: [Solved] Cannot boot to new SSD

Please paste details of your drive setup and partition table and your grub config.

Not a Sysadmin issue, moving to NC...

As I said in post #2, the filesystem has become empty since I rebooted, so I cannot post the new grub.cfg. This explains why I cannot boot to it, but now I need to find out why all the data in the filesystem disappeared.

Re: [Solved] Cannot boot to new SSD

It's not a joke. There have been a couple of threads here over the last several months complaining about similar issues. AFAIAA, BTRFS is still an experimental filesystem (as our wiki makes pretty clear).

Presumably, you have full backups so it is not really an issue.

Re: [Solved] Cannot boot to new SSD

Yes, I have full backups so it's not really an issue.

I have re-migrated to the SSD and now the storage is persisting. I have no idea what went wrong the first time. However, the system bootup still uses grub on the hard drive, /dev/sda.

So, I regenerated grub-mkconfig onto /boot/grub/grub.cfg on the hard disk. It picks up the Arch installation on /dev/sdc2 (the SSD) and makes it the last entry in the boot list. But, booting to that entry gives a kernel panic.

Here is the grub.cfg on the hard drive:

#
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE

Re: [Solved] Cannot boot to new SSD

Oh, well. I guess it's time for a fresh install, anyway. Sigh.

Re: [Solved] Cannot boot to new SSD

Tim,

What was the exact command you used to install GRUB?

Matthew.

Re: [Solved] Cannot boot to new SSD

To the SSD? I used "grub-install /dev/sdc", then "grub-mkconfig -o /mnt/sdc2/boot/grub/grub.cfg".

Re: [Solved] Cannot boot to new SSD

Well you obviously need to copy your data over again; but I also imagine you need to tell your bios to use the ssd as the primary boot device. You could wipe your mbr on the old-hard drive to be sure (but you'll need a rescue-stick in case the sdd still doesn't boot)

Re: [Solved] Cannot boot to new SSD

@Spider.007 - Thanks. But I have three other OS's installed on the HDD. That will be drastic, if I have to do it. wink

I will look at the BIOS config. I thought the SATA III SSD would just look like another disk drive to the system. I don't recall reading anything like that in the Wiki article.

Ok, I'm going to try the fresh install route...

Re: [Solved] Cannot boot to new SSD

The problem was solved with a fresh install. Apparently, something is wrong with the system migration instructions that I followed.

Unfortunately for me, it will take a long time to configure the new installation.
