consolekit forked

https://erickoegel.wordpress.com/tag/consolekit2/

https://github.com/ConsoleKit2/ConsoleKit2/releases

It's old news , but i just found it today when reading about the devuan fork of debian.

I hope Mr Koegel will get help from others, having maintained alternatives is always good imo.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: consolekit forked

The only question this raise to me is: Why no one try to do this before?... was not consolekit unmaintainer for YEARS (years even before sÿstëmd)?

Well, I suppose that this is somekind of signature, no?

^ this. I have not installed ck (or felt its absence) for some time. What need does this fork serve?

For those that don't want to use systemd-logind.

Re: consolekit forked

I never quite got the usecase for the consolekits either in the first place,
is it mostly about getting to shutdown/hibernate and such without having user-credentials to do so?

Why would it not just have been set with user permissions/groups? Is it because it is less secure and dangerous to have your user being able to do such actions via permissions and without an extra layer running?

(I am talking about pre-systemd, didn't use the kit's then either personally atleast)

Re: consolekit forked

ConsoleKit2 is a framework for defining and tracking users, login
sessions, and seats.

Both logind & CK provide similar functionality, that can be used to define user access policies setup through polkit .
You can use polkit with linux user groups to achieve the same, but using logind/CK is a lot more flexible.

The ability to shutdown/hibernate as normal user is the most visible part, but i think logind/CK shine on multi-user systems using multiple ways/devices to access the hardware.

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=185110 is about logind and what it does.
