Does anyone know whether the fvwm-devel in unstable has the translucency patch applied?
Offline
I'm not certain about fvwm-devel but fvwm-cvs in AUR does and I have had NO probelms with it. Best WM I have ever used (of course I tend to say that about whichever one I am using at the moment).

Thnks, i never actually looked in aur before, its a little hidden.
Anyway theres fvwm-trans 2.5.16-2 which i presume stands for translucency and the cvs version you mentioned.
Any particular reason to go with one over the other?
I had heard of fvwm before anf tried it ages ago - thought it was the ugliest thing i ever saw:-) I read something about its themeability somewhere and now im hooked - its been a while since something has me that interested.

I maintain the fvwm-trans package and the translucency patch isn't the only one applied. It has a patch that adds menu functionality as well but that aside, there is probably not much difference between the two.

Personally I like fvwm-cvs from AUR and fvwm-crystal at http://fvwm-crystal.org/download.html. I use the instructions for the development release and I make certain I have met all dependencies from the requirements section. Once you get everything working all you have to do is versionpkg in /var/abs/local/fvwm-cvs and then pacman -U fvwm-cvs......, and once in a while do a darcs pull from the fvwm-crystal repository in your home directory. The great thing about fvwm is you can make it anything you want. I prefer a low maintenance approach that keeps me current. I have never actually tried fvwm-trans so I have no idea what I might be missing. I keep all mods to the default theme in my ~/.fvwm directory and to be honest I have never been happier with my desktop.

Arch - It's something refreshing

Two great things about arch. The great work and assistance that contributors such as dibblethewrecker provide (one example only) and the fact that all I have to do is copy a package to /var/abs/local and take a stab at seeing if I can do it. One of the reasons I have learned more on Arch than any other distro I have ever used.

That's why I promote it whenever I have an occasion
