OK, so I just made a new user and tried startx from there. All worked perfectly. It must be something wrong with the user itself. Easiest fix from here is to simply make a new user and start from there.

That is not a satisfying solution, but I'm glad you got it working.

I3-config-wizard failed because windows manager was not started. Open windowed terminal and execute i3-config-wizard in it. It worked for me.
