Arch Dedicated Plex Media Server

I'm fully away Arch Linux has the best Wiki however I really wanted to poll the Arch community for some Plex help. My dedicated NAS appliance runs my Plex server which I'm clearly not suited for considering my NAS runs an ARM CPU from a Glade air freshener and has limited transcoding ability / support.

I've got a spare quad core Intel CPU w/ 8 GB's of DDR3 RAM which I'd love to run Plex from. Basically I want to make a dedicated Plex Media Server running on top of Arch Linux. I see the Plex package is available in the AUR and has only 1 single dependancy which appears to be systemd which I've made peace w/ a long time ago. So I will ask, do you guys or galls see any problems running a  dedicated Plex Meda Server on Arch Linux headless? I will only have a bare minimal install of Arch Linux and then load the Plex media server package on it. So no GUI at all. Just SSH and direct console access.

Thanks for any info!

Re: Arch Dedicated Plex Media Server

I've been doing it for a while. Works great, no complaints. Plex is managed from the web, so you shouldn't have any problems running it on a headless box. Also, be aware of the permissions requirements upon install. Plex wants to run as the plex user  and this user will not only need to have appropriate permissions on it's installation directory (/opt/plexmediaserver) but also any media folders you want to include. Good luck!

Re: Arch Dedicated Plex Media Server

I'm running Plex server on my (mostly) headless Arch Linux NAS/server and it's been working perfectly. It's technically not headless anymore since I hooked it up to my tv and installed XBMC on it, but I've been using Plex a long time before that without issues. It's running an Intel Celeron G1820 (Haswell) and currently has 4GB's of RAM, and I've had no issues with streaming whatsoever. Whenever I'm at a friends house or at a party and someone wants to watch a movie, I just login on the Plex webinterface through a laptop or smart TV and get full access to my library, and it has worked flawlessly everytime smile
