webcam output to skype is very dull

hi all.

i have skype multilib/skype 4.3.0.37-3 installed on x64 archlinux kernel Linux Home 3.17.6-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Dec 7 23:43:32 UTC 2014 x86_64 GNU/Linux

from lshw, the relevant details about my webcam are this

previously, on skype, i used to be able to adjust the brightness level apparent on my video output using guvcview.
i would adjust it by changing the exposure amount. but now, that doesn't seem to work. i can't boost my video brightness.

i am stuck with a dull contrast and the colors aren't focused. plus, there is a ~60 Hz refresh rate signal i can see
scanning up the output of the camera feed. so, i'm wondering if anything has changed?

i am completely up-to-date as of 2015-01-10 @ 12:06 UTC.

if there's any more information i can provide to help others help me, i would be more than happy to provide it.
