Hi,
I've installed Arch in a dual boot on my mac only yesterday, so sorry if this is a noob question (but I guess that's what the Newbie corner is for).
The audio from my internal speakers works just fine, as well as my headphones when I plug them in, but for some reason there is a red light coming out of my headphone jack. I've searched on the forums and found https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=177761, which seems to be the same case. Problem is, when I try to recreate the commands from this thread, i just get errors that the commands are not found (hda-verb and options in particular). I've installed Arch following this guide: http://codylittlewood.com/arch-linux-on … tallation/. Should I be alarmed by this, or is there some way I can just disable the light and not worry about it anymore?

I was never able to fix it for the 3 years I had my MBP. It never caused any problems.

hda-verb is in the alsa-tools package. Install that if you want to use hda-verb. But if I just wanted to shut the light off, I'd check if it was listed anywhere under /sys/class/leds/*

AFAIK muting it will turn off the light.

I had a MacBook 2,1 a while back. I had this problem, but it wasn't caused by software. Instead, the little switch in the headphone jack was stuck down, and apparently it thought that there was an optical cable stuck in there. I used a toothpick to free the switch and it went away.
But you should definitely be looking into seeing the the digital audio output is on when it shouldn't be.

@WonderWoofy it's definitely not stuck on, since the light isn't on when I boot in Mac OS.
@cedeel sorry for the stupid question, but could you explain a little more on how I would AFAIK mute it?

Hello
I have a MacBook Pro 7,1. I can turn the red light off and on by running alsamixer and muting or unmuting S/PDIF 16.

Oh wow ok, I didn't know AFAIK is As Far As I Know, haha XD thought it was some technical term I didn't know.
@youngdm thanks, I tried muting in alsamixer and it's gone now

Hey, I was having the same problem, see my post for a 'nicer' solution
