I'm trying to get Arch running on a little sony vaio vgn-p688e but I cant get the xsession to start. It has an intel gma500 and i have tried both the gma500_gfx module and the xf86-video-intel module with the same result. It seems like xorg cant find my display.
xrandr gives me
Can't open displaylspci -v gives me

What have you followed from the Wiki entry: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Poulsbo ?

I have gone through that wiki page however it doesn't seem to have any useful information for my problem. The correct kernel module is loaded, as verified per the wiki. I didn't try the modsetting driver section because it says its for an external monitor, and all the trouble shooting is for problems I dont have.
Thanks you for responding though. I should mention that I was able to install Debian and get into an X environment no problem.

You do need a video driver for X. If the card is not supported by drivers specifically for it, then you need modesetting, fbdev, or vesa. While that wiki says modesetting is needed to use an additional monitor, it suggests the default (for not having an external monitor) would be fbdev. You need to install at least one of those. (I'd recommend modesetting in either case).

Thank you, that fixed it quite soundly. I just installed xf86-video-modesetting and rebooted. Now I have a working X enviorment.

Glad that worked, please remember to mark the thread as solved. By the way, debian likely worked because by default a crapload of drivers are installed even though a vast majority of users wouldn't need them, while arch takes a build-it-yourself approach.
