I'm having problems with connecting my ThinkPad W530 to external monitors since a few months. I'm using NVIDIA Optimus and bumblebee/optirun since the VGA and Mini DisplayPort connectors are only wired to the NVIDIA card om this laptop. For a long time I have executed:

$ intel-virtual-outputThen I have started the Screens GUI tool in Gnome to setup the placement of the external screen but now the external screen is not present in the GUI tool and xrandr gives me:

This has never worked for me in Arch Linux so that is no surprise. In Ubuntu everything everything worked fine the last time I tried.
How can I debug this? Why is the external screen not detected any more?

I have a W520 and have the same problem with nVidia. I never got bumblebee to work, but I atleast could detect the monitors with Discrete graphics mode. Now, whenever I start using external monitors, it just hangs as you describe. I'm running the stock kernel.

I have NVIDIA Optimus working without external monitor, not sure what did it however, try linux-ck kernel and install nvidia-dkms (there might be some manual settings) together with bumblebee, you should be able to get programs running on your NVIDIA card at least that way.
But how to debug that external monitor are not detected?

Have you had a look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log? I didn't really see anything relevant in mine, but maybe our causes are different. Can you see USB peripherals connected to the external monitors? I can with mine, they just don't show up in xrandr.

Thanks, I am not sure exactly how to read the logs but I cannot find anything that is obviously wrong

Which log files should I look in and what can be the problem, I'm installing regular updates of both linux-ck and nvidia packages but the error does not seem to get fixed by updates so maybe some settings got broken during one of the updates?
