Re: [SOLVED] broadcom-wl* kernel 3.18 issues thread

> An user says that the kernel panic occurs on connection to 2.4GHz network, but don't on connection to 5Ghz ones. Unfortunately I cannot test it at the moment.

Tried it, and it still crashed.

Also, for me it doesn't happen while connecting or scanning, but rather while sending packets. wifi-menu works fine.

Re: [SOLVED] broadcom-wl* kernel 3.18 issues thread

Same for me, kernel panic with a BCM43227 everytime a packet is sent. But establishing a connection with my access point works without any problem. (By the way, matteoguglielmi, I had your problem too, but I fixed it by chrooting, removing the packages filesystem linux and kmod from pacman cache, and reinstalling them.)

Similar here. I can attach to the AP, I can DHCP, I can ping ; Kernel panic seems to occur on TCP packets. Kernel stacktrace mentions the TCP stack as well, unlike some others here.

Re: [SOLVED] broadcom-wl* kernel 3.18 issues thread

I know this is not a fix perse, but it did get me past this issue:

I used the following ASUS USB-56 wireless adapter, until this gem came in the post "Intel 7260AC". Broadcom issues are now a thing of the past.

My original wireless card was:

It must be said I've never even needed to install the broadcom-wl driver at all like I've done in the Lenovo that has indeed a kernel panic ... could this little toy help anyhow?

Anything we might investigate in it? It's a test machine so I don't mind playing with any kind of request you might have in order to eventually try to understand why there's no issue in it.

Best regards

I'm also getting the kernel panic. Using BCM 4313 on HP Envy 6:

    Kernel modules: bcma, wl

I've downgraded to 3.17.6-1-ARCH.

The panics seem to be caused by the wl driver, so it's not surprising that your asus laptop doesn't have problems.

yeah I know, the comment in the broadcom-wl stated to report if b43 would work without problems and I actually don't even know if that's the driver I am using (I guess so)

trying broadcom-wl in here should be pointless too, right? oh well ...

Re: [SOLVED] broadcom-wl* kernel 3.18 issues thread

This topic is specifically about the kernel panic caused by using the broadcom-wl driver, as stated in the title. This driver is also not officially supported by Arch developers since it is from the AUR, and anyone using AUR packages are themselves responsible for any problems that may arise. I just wanted to point that out since it seemed like some blamed this problem on the distro when it fact the problem seem be specifically with the proprietary wl driver.

This problem has been known since the 3.18 kernel came into the testing repo. Personally I had to switch to ethernet for now, since my broadcom card is not supported by the open source driver. I would strongly suggest that everyone check the wiki to see if their card is supported by the open source driver, because then there is no need to use the wl driver which causes this kernel panic.

As some others have said, the LTS kernel work with the wl driver, so that is also an option.

Re: [SOLVED] broadcom-wl* kernel 3.18 issues thread

A newbie question here: is the proprietary broadcom wl driver will ever be supported by kernel developers? I had a dream to get arch on my machine, so that I can learn more about Linux, but the dreams seems shattering knowing that my BCM43142 is not an officially supported wireless card on my Lenovo B590. I can't find any distro other than Arch which is so well documented, what options do I have? sad

Since the linux kernel is an open-source project, I don't think it would ever support proprietary drivers. As to your options, you could use the linux-lts kernel, or use a usb wifi card if you have one.

same problem on Lenovo E330 3354 (i3-3120).
3.17.x kernels work normally, 3.18.x panic.
Broadcom 4313.
lspci output:

p.s. 3.18 kernel has appeared to ubuntu 15.04 unstable yet, going to see whwther it's working.

Re: [SOLVED] broadcom-wl* kernel 3.18 issues thread

Hello, I have a MBPr (MacBook Pro retina) late 2013 with the following broadcom wireless network adapter.  When I first started using Arch, which was around kernel 3.14.x I think, there was a need to build a kernel module in order to get the native broadcom wireless adapter working.  However, in the late series of 3.17.x kernels it seemed that native support for the broadom wireless adapter listed below was working, and there was no need to build the packages mentioned earlier in the thread.  When I upgraded to the 3.18.x series of kernels, I noticed that I could no longer connect to a wifi network with the broadcom wireless adapter.  I'm not getting kernel panics as other users have mentioned, but then again I don't think the 3.18.2 kernel that I am running is communicating with the broadcom wirelss adapter mentioned below.  I hope this issue can get resolved sooner than later.

According to the wiki, you have to rebuild the driver every time you change kernel versions. This is probably why wifi isn't working for you. I bet if you rebuilt the driver and used it, you'd start getting the kernel panics too. My advice is to downgrade to 3.17.x for now until this is fixed. I have this same setup (Broadcom 4360 on Late 2013 rMBP) and this is what I did.

No need to rebuild if you use broadcom-wl-dkms, since dkms does the rebuilding for you silently.

I was under impression that native support for the BMC4360 had been builtin to the kernel since the late versions of 3.17.x series of kernels because I wasn't having to rebuild the broadcom-wl-dkms package in the past few kernel updates I ran via pacman.

Re: [SOLVED] broadcom-wl* kernel 3.18 issues thread

Panic with linux-3.18 and broadcom-wl-dkms (6.30.223.248) using card:
03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4352 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter [14e4:43b1] (rev 03)

Driver compiles, and module loads okay.  Panic sometimes occurs right as I connect to the network, sometimes shortly after when any significant traffic is sent.

Rolling back to the latest 3.17 kernel fixes problem.

Have not tried non-dkms version of driver or b43 -- I am fairly certain neither supports this card.

Installing b43-firmware and using that doesn't work.

Like I said, the -dkms versions does the rebuilding of the driver for you upon kernel upgrades (via dkms), so there's no need to so manually.

Kernel panic on my machine when navigating to a webpage on a browser. lspci -nn returns the following as my wireless card:
