Intel here, and no compositor of any kind, and the icon does not appear.

Weird, are you sure you don't have XFCE's build in compositor activated?

My CPU: Intel i5 U520

Thanks for testing

Re: no dropbox icon in gnome-shell

Oh! You're right, I do have it on. I apologise. I'll still stick to dropbox2 for some time, until this all is fixed.

Re: no dropbox icon in gnome-shell

On a standard KDE, I solved the problem copying the icons from:
/opt/dropbox/images/hicolor/16x16/status/
to:
/usr/share/icons/oxygen/16x16/status/

(and obviously using the Oxygen icon theme)

In other DE you could try copying these icons into the folder of the current icon theme.

This solution is not working for gnome-shell.

The reason the dropbox icon disappears is a bug in dropbox version 3.0.x (at least for x<=3).
So the momentary best solution is to downgrade to 2.10.52.

To do so, make the following steps:
1. Download the AUR package: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/dr/d … box.tar.gz
2. Extract it and replace in the PKGBUILD 3.0.3 with 2.10.52 and save the file.
3. Run makepkg -g in the same directory where PKGBUILD is in order to get the new hashsums and place them in the PKGBUILD and save it again.
4. Run makepkg -f in the same directory where PKGBUILD is in order to get the new installation package.
5. Install that new package e.g. by pacman -U *.pkg.tar.xz
6. Prevent Dropbox autoupdate (it likes to install itself in the user directory in ~/.dropbox-dist!) by:
rm -rf ~/.dropbox-dist
install -dm0 ~/.dropbox-dist
7. Prevent repository updates. Edit /etc/pacman.conf to include IgnorePkg   = dropbox
8. Run dropbox. You have got version 2.10.52 and it can't autoaupdate itself again.

Thank you, sir! smile

If anyone in doubt about this line in PKGBUILD:

[ "$CARCH" = "x86_64" ] && sha256sums[0]=....

Just comment it out because "makepkg -g" would already given you the right checksum for your system.

Also, don't bother about not having the "~/.dropbox-dist" folder if you're already using Dropbox 3.x in a clean installation smile

Cheers!

Re: no dropbox icon in gnome-shell

I have a fresh install of arch in my new laptop, running on xfce4 and when installed dropbox came up with this issue...

From this link I found out about the compositor being enabled causing the problem... so when I disabled compositor and logged out/in the tray icon was there again.

For me, having compositor enabled also causes problem with the tray icon of Clementine (music player)... so for now, I have compositor off...

hope this adds to the thread and shows is not only a dropbox problem...

cheers

Re: no dropbox icon in gnome-shell

Here is how I solve the problem:

1. edit dropbox.service file

sudo nano /usr/share/application/dropbox.desktop

2. change two lines into:

 Exec=dropbox
 StartupNotify=true

Re: no dropbox icon in gnome-shell

The icon has started working for me; no changes from my part besides updating installed packages (pacman -Syu).
Do some of you still experience the problem?

Yes, it is working now. Qt was updated a couple of days ago, which had the bug that was causing the icon to be full transparent. Perhaps they (Qt team) have fixed it wink
