Waiting for 30 seconds error when trying to boot install media

Hi everyone,

I'm not exactly new to Arch - I used it for years before switching to a different distro. However, I'm trying to make a new install on my Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E525 laptop, which runs in UEFI mode, and I get the famous "Waiting for 30 seconds error" when I try to boot the install media from a USB pendrive.

I tried different ISO's, including the latest one - 2015.01.01. I always use dd in order to create my install media. This is the command I use : "sudo dd if=pathto.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=4M". The volume name always seems to be correct, as per what the wiki mentions.

Moreover, when I launch the UEFI shell instead of the installer, the system freezes and I need to do a hardware reboot.

Is there any other information I should provide?

Thanks a lot,

EV.

PS: I have the latest firmware available for my laptop.

Does it work in BIOS mode?

Yes, it does. Can I boot in BIOS mode, install the system on my GPT disk and install GRUB in UEFI mode?

Re: Waiting for 30 seconds error when trying to boot install media

#1 Can I boot in BIOS mode, #2 install the system on my GPT disk and #3 install GRUB in UEFI mode?

You can't do 1 with 3. You might do 1 with 2 however if you want to install on a 2TB+ drive.

You can't do 1 with 2 if 2 is a Windows 8 UEFI install. In that case, you can reinstall Windows in MBR mode.
