Restart X, not windowmanager and applications

Is it possible to restart only X without restarting the windowmanager and any running application?

For instance, when you have edited xorg.conf and want to relode it. Or if you want to switch serverlayout.

Because X spawns the programs (processes) you launch in your graphical environment and when you kill a process, you kill its child processes aswell.

Right?
