[SOLVED] Full Instructions for Upgrading from KDE4 to Plasma 5?

I almost threw my computer against the wall yesterday after trying to upgrade to Plasma 5.2. I followed what I thought were the complete instructions from the Wiki: install SDDM, remove kdebase-workspace (using Pacman -Rsc kdebase-workspace), then installing Plasma.

What I rebooted to was unusable. I had no Konsole and no Dolphin, and many of my apps were gone. I had to restore my old system from a backup in order to get anything done.

Would someone *please* list the *entire* sequence for updating from a current KDE4 installation to the "recommended" Plasma 5.2? Thank you!

pacman -Rc kdebase-workspace. Do *NOT* do pacman -Rsc, as that will remove your entire KDE installation (as you already found out). If you got that from the wiki, please edit asap.

Is there a group for "KDE Applications"? Searching using pacman -Sg I'm seeing a bunch of little groups, but nothing marked "KDE Applications 4.12.1"

Isn't -Rc just as bad? It looks like it'll remove all packages that depend on kdebase-workspace. (I've used Arch for almost a decade, but I've never tried -Rc. What exactly *does* it do?)

What commands would follow to get Plasma 5.2 and other related programs installed?

pacman -Rc removes the specified package(s) and all the packages dependant on the specified.

So, let me see if I get this straight:

Step 1: pacman -Sy sddm
Step 2: pacman -Rc kdebase-workspace
Step 3: pacman -Sy plasma-meta
Step 4: reboot

Is this correct? Will I have a working system afterwards, complete with Dolphin and Konsole? Do I need to install anything else to upgrade?

Let me backup what I've got first, then please let me give the above a try before marking this solved. I'm skittish about Plasma 5.2 right now, as you can understand.

I was struggling there for a day and just followed these instructions. Now I have a very nice plasma desktop.

Of course there are still some minor adjustments to be made (sddm, kodi display) but this got me to boot into plasma and I am happy about that.

Well, I have Dolphin and Konsole now, at the expense of no longer running kfilebox. I had to download and build dropbox from AUR.

So, if anyone wants to follow these instructions, here's exactly what I did:

Step 1: From Konsole, run sudo systemctl isolate multi-user.target.
Step 2: pacman -Su sddm sddm-kcm
Step 3: pacman -Rc kdebase-workspace
Step 4: pacman -Su plasma-meta
Step 5: reboot

It seems to work, so someone please mark this as solved. Thank you!

These steps worked for me (upgrading from KDE4 to Plasma 5), however it's also worth noting that I had to disable kdm in order to get sddm to start on boot:

systemctl disable kdm
systemctl enable sddm

This is a great thread with correct (and very simple) solution for upgrading to plasma5.

I used it and it worked perfectly.

I need to know 2 things though.
1) pacman -Rc kdebase-workspace ---- removed lots of kde-meta-* packages. Do I need to re-install them? Or they are no more needed?
2) Can I delete .kde4 directory from my home or there are apps still using it?

PS: Not creating new thread because I suppose if answer of any of the above question is yes then in that case, they need mention in above solution.

I think you'll run into problems either way. The kde-meta-* packages are probably in conflict with plasma-meta, and there are still some KDE4 (14.12) apps on your system that likely still use the .kde4 directory.

You can't reinstall them because they depend on kdebase-workspace

KDE4 apps still use it so don't delete it

Possibly last questions - will there be post / mention on wiki that - migration is complete and .kde4 directory can be deleted?

Second - what about qt4? Will it be removed automatically (once migration is complete) OR it will need to be done manually?

The .kde4 dir will never be completely removed during the Plasma 5 lifetime because Plasma5 writes to it when you change something in systemsettings in order to keep kde4 applications settings in sync. And no, the qt4 package will not be removed automatically.

Hi, I had installed kde5 on a first installation, but then because kde5 wasn't stable enough for my needs, I installed kdebase-workspace. Now I installed plasma-meta, It starts but It doesn't work, my mouse moves, but I can't click anything and it's very slow. I used xinitrc but I don't see any meaningful log. So I wonder if any of you have had some issue like this.
