i686 boot fails with kernel panic - not syncing

i tried a ubuntu i686 image and it boots on the pc.
the pc is a 64 bit laptop with 4GB memory.
i am trying to build a 32bit usb system but if i686 isn't even going to boot on the system, i'm stuck.

any ideas?

you shouldn't be trying to install a i686 on a 64 bit Arch anyhow that's not wise due to 1: i686 older systems ment with under 2gb of RAM an 32 Arch not 64 so you need to install the x86_64 OS not i686

normally, you should be able to install/build 32bit software on 64bit CPU, but it's not an optimal configuration, because your RAM will be limited to 3,5GB or less, not all newest instruction will be used such as AVX, etc

64 bit laptop with 4GB memory.

Yeah, that's some detailed information. But "not syncing [...]" does sound like a corrupted ISO. Download again and check sums/sig.
