[SOLVED] HDMI stopped working

I've been running Arch on my Chromebook for a while.  I've got a 24" monitor sat gathering dust so I decided to buy a HDMI cable and put it to use.  Plugged it in yesterday, ran arandr and it worked instantly.  I unplugged it at some point, plugged it back in and it still worked.

Today it does not work.  I have no idea what's changed but arandr does not list the monitor, xrandr outputs

Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1366 x 768, maximum 32767 x 32767
eDP1 connected 1366x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 256mm x 144mm
   1366x768 60.00*+
   1024x768 60.00
   800x600 60.32 56.25
   640x480 59.94
VIRTUAL1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

aplay -l outputs

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC283 Analog [ALC283 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: HDMI [HDA Intel HDMI], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: HDMI [HDA Intel HDMI], device 7: HDMI 1 [HDMI 1]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: HDMI [HDA Intel HDMI], device 8: HDMI 2 [HDMI 2]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

The monitor should auto-detect which input is being used, it always has done in the past and the inbuilt options will not display if there is no input.  I've had a very good look at both HDMI ports and both ends of the cable, I cannot see any damage.

Any idea why it would stop working?

Re: [SOLVED] HDMI stopped working

Does it work with other devices or with (the live version of) other distributions?

I've not got any other devices to test it with.  I can try out a live distro, will grab crunchbang and give it a go.

arandr in crunchbang (live) does not detect it either.  Do you think it's a hardware fault?

Re: [SOLVED] HDMI stopped working

I grabbed another monitor and the same thing happens.  Does the aplay output suggest that the HDMI port is functioning, and that it's probably the cheap cable that's broken?

Re: [SOLVED] HDMI stopped working

If you suspect a hardware flaw then the cable is a good starting point, yes. If that still doesn't help, check it in a recent Windows version.

Re: [SOLVED] HDMI stopped working

Interestingly with the new monitor, if I boot with it plugged in then the HDMI appears in arandr and xrandr, but it is listed as disconnected.  Unplugging the cable does not change this.  Booting with it unplugged it is not listed, and plugging it in does not change this.

Re: [SOLVED] HDMI stopped working

I booted up with Monitor 2 plugged in, xrandr listed it but said disconnected, then I moved the cable over to Monitor 1 and voila - it worked!  Now I can never unplug it for fear of it not working again...

Seriously though, seems like it's just a dodgey cable.  I'll see if I can test it at a friends house tomorrow.
