i just updated with -Syu, also installed java run time and the new firefox.
my desktop starts to freeze once in a while. i can use the mouse but it lags.
keyboard doesn't work and i can't click on anything. no response. only thing i can do is pull the plug and reboot. i use enlightenment 17 from cvs. maybe that's why. but i haven't updated that one rececently so i don't see why this problem would come up now.

Well, it's hard to say. Try updating to a more recent version from cvs, or another WM to see if there's any difference.

I'm actually having the same exact problem since my last Syu. Keyboard doesn't respond but I can use the mouse. System is laggy. Looking at gkrellm on the desktop shows no heavy processor usage and no excessive memory consumption that would explain the laggyness. Perhaps rdoggsv and I should collaborate to see which "weird" packages we have installed and see if we can track down what's causing this. If you want to hit me on AIM my name is gyr015.
edit: I use fluxbox so it doesn't appear to be the window manager

I hate to bring up this old thread again, but the same problem is happening to me. I don't expect a solution, so I might as well group my post with these others.
This actually used to happen a while ago, when I enabled Composite extensions for X (before Xorg7- In addition, others in IRC had the same problem and disabling Composite fixed it. But that time it froze even when NOT using firefox). Since the xorg7 update, this has been happening at seemingly random intervals only when using Firefox. I use openbox as a wm, nvidia drivers (VGA: GF4 MX440), and the kernel26ck kernel from the AUR.
As previously mentioned, the keyboard is completely unresponsive (can't even turn capslock on/off). The mouse responds by moving around, BUT clicking does nothing. Nothing responds. My sysmonitor on the desktop, torsmo, behaves normally. I have sshd running, so I can ssh from another computer to check out what's going on.
Sometimes, everything is normal. Completely normal. No high usage from anything, even firefox. Othertimes, firefox usage is 100%. Even other times, X is using 100% CPU.
Killing firefox fixes the problem- sometimes. Sometimes, if X usage is 100%, killing X doesn't fix the problem. The keyboard is still unresponsive and you are stuck at a black screen. Other times, when firefox appears to be the only program out of control, killing it doesn't fix it.
Nothing particular seems to trigger this in Firefox. Sometimes i could be on a site with embedded flash/java/etc with 10 tabs open, othertimes I have 1 tab open and am looking at basic HTML.
Obviously this could be a lot of things, but based on my experience with the Composite extension months ago, I am inclined to think it has something to do with X and/or the nvidia drivers (maybe the drivers aren't completely happy with Xorg7), and somehow Firefox is triggering this to happen. Previously, when dealing with Composite, X would freeze like this even without Firefox, which is why I don't think Firefox is directly to blame- Although these recent occurances in Xorg7 have exclusively happened when using Firefox.
If nothing else, let this post just be for reference purposes. Maybe someone will figure this out one day

The archck kernel has been moved to the [extra] repo , see iphitus threads in the announcement sections for details.
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
(A works at time B) && (time C > time B ) ≠ (A works at time C)

I'm having the same problem here. Randomly X freezes using xfce4-svn and firefox or azureus.. How to disable composite?
Haven't been here in a while. Still rocking Arch.

How to disable composite?
take it out of your xorg.conf?
#Section "Extensions"
# Option "Composite" "true"
#EndSection
perhaps you just meant on a per-application basis? that I have no answer for...
you should see what happens when i try to run gtkpacman in Xgl...*shudder*

If you never enabled Composite yourself by adding that to your X config, it is unlikely you have it. Recently this freezing has been worse for me, I think it is angry that I tattled on the forums about it

I use kernel26ck, not archck. Although both may be in extra soon.

This is interesting, I have the same problem when im using OpenBox. (thought I was the only one)
All of a sudden the system freezes except the mouse that still works, keyboard is totally dead. This only happens for me when im using OpenBox.

Yea, this happened to me just the other day. I'm using Openbox. Since that last post, I have completely changed hardware as well. Was using Firefox with some embedded videos/multiple tabs and then updatedb kicked off via cron and it froze the WM/keyboard/etc. Firefox appeared to still work, the mouse was moving around, conky was still updating and working, but the keyboard was completely unresponsive and the mouse couldn't be used to interact with anything.

This has also happened to me in OpenBox a lot, I recently switched to E17-CVS and have no more problems with random freezes. It seems that there is an OpenBox problem because this doesn't persist in any other WM for me.
Offline
could a mod please split this, it's a bug in openbox unrelated to this thread.
Offline
Is it? Or are you just speculating? Because I had it happen with WMs other than OpenBox and the freezing behavior has been described by other people not running OB.

It's interesting they trace it to dragging windows around, while this was almost certainly never the case for myself. It always happened under high load. I rarely move windows around anyways.

I don't think anyone knows what is wrong or how to reproduce it, so no.

Well got the same problem, it does however usually only appear when the daily cronjobs at 00:02 is running. Crash happens because I use the mouse, like dragging a window around, though I can avoid the crash by NOT touching the mouse during thoes few minutes. Writing on keyboard does not cause it crash though.
If it crash, every thing on screen is working properly, 'cept for keyboard is completely dead and mouse I can move around on screen but not click on anything. I can still see applets like conky update, people writing on IRC etc.
Well thought I was the only one having crashes like these. Also I can't find any trace in logs.

K i use arch for like 4 days now on which i havent slept much cuz of this annoying problem.
My solution was to get rid of that damn gdm and use xinitrc to start my openbox session thats seems to fix this problem for me.
Another nice side effect was that my keyboard which occasionally repeated a letter for no good reason stopped doing so.
All my arch possible problems ( for now) are solved and i can live without a gdm cuz I mainly use my openbox now. Anyways hope I helped and that this solution will do u wonders as it did to me

I don't use gdm, but I use SLiM with openbox. I suppose I could try not using it for a while to see if it makes a difference...
