gdm broken this morning

Hello folks,

EDIT: In short accountsservice-0.6.38-1 breaks my gdm.

[2014-09-25 06:49] [PACMAN] upgraded accountsservice (0.6.37-1 -> 0.6.38-1)

After that gdm will not work on boot or by starting the service manually.  In the logs I see:

gdm[1515]: Failed to give slave programs access to the display. Trying to proceed.

X11 seems to start up partially on VT1:  the screen is frozen at the end of the boot messages. I log in VT2 and startx there. Then I switch to VT1 and see a X cursor and a gray background.

I also tried putting this in /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config

#allowed_users = rootonly|console|anybody
#needs_root_rights = yes|no|auto
allowed_users=anybody
needs_root_rights=yes

I am now stuck and do not know where to look.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Re: gdm broken this morning

I have found this in the gdm logs from systemd:

gdm[1515]: Failed to give slave programs access to the display. Trying to proceed.

PS: got Newbie-cornered after 2-years of 50h/week on this arch laptop :-O lol

Re: gdm broken this morning

Hi,
Same thing for me when I switched to [testing] to test gnome 3.14, blank screen with a nvidia GTX660 (with nouveau or nvidia drivers).
I tried to reinstall all my packages (as adviced by this comment : https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … #p1460321), but it doesn't fix the problem for me.

Thank you !

Edit : And I forgot to say that the error message sent by gdm is the same as @soul_rebel

Re: gdm broken this morning

I managed to identify the culprit package: accountsservice and updated the first post. Still do not know how to proceed. I will investigate the changelog when I can.

Re: gdm broken this morning

Is anyone of you using the Ubuntu tweaked font rendering packages from the AUR (cairo, freetype2, fontconfig)? That was the reason in my case, installing the unpatched packages did the trick.

Re: gdm broken this morning

I installed a custom PKGBUILD for cairo-ubuntu, compatible with gnome 3.14, and everything is okay now. Thank you Thorsten Reinbold !

Edit: I used this one : https://www.dropbox.com/s/963agpamamrvw … ntu.tar.gz

Re: gdm broken this morning

guys I am not running Gnome 3.14 or font stuff from AUR. There are two issues here and mine is clearly with accountsservice.

Re: gdm broken this morning

Ok, sorry. I misunderstood you, because I had the same problem (gdm was broken for me too) and downgrading accountservice didn't helped. Have you tried that? You can get a previous version from here: http://seblu.net/a/arm/

Re: gdm broken this morning

Still happening with accountsservice 0.6.40-1. I would welcome help on how to debug at this point since C/X11/dbus is not my usual cup of tea. Any idea on how to obtain debug traces?

Re: gdm broken this morning

Tried a shot in the dark and found the problem: multiple usernames for the same uid.
