[Solved] Help Installing iwlwifi

Hello there. I am completely new to Arch.
I'm on kernel 3.18.2 and gnome as my desktop.
I've reinstalled linux-firmware, reinstalled iw, wpa_supplicant, dialog, pacman -Syu,  and a number of other things. The kernel module is not installed and I have not been able to find a way to do so.

lspci:

06:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 7260 (rev 6b)

ip a:

    inet 127.0.0.1/8 scope host lo
       valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
    inet6 ::1/128 scope host
       valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
2: sit0@NONE: <NOARP> mtu 1480 qdisc noop state DOWN group default
    link/sit 0.0.0.0 brd 0.0.0.0

iwconfig:

    sit0 no wireless extensions.

    lo no wireless extensions.

wifi-menu:

Invalid interface specification

While arch-chroot, dmesg shows:

[   14.150360] iwlwifi 0000:06:00.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0002)

[ 49.607817] iwlwifi 0000:06:00.0: L1 Enabled - LTR Enabled

While logged in normally, dmesg shows nothing for iwlwifi. I'm assuming this is because wifi-menu works from the live disk thus running the wifi card; the driver is not actually installed but running off the live disk.

lsmod also has nothing for iwlwifi

Hi, Can you confirm the firmware is correctly installed when logged in normally (non-live cd) ?

You should use code tags rather than quote tags when posting large chunks like this, or any chunks of code/output/log.

Re: [Solved] Help Installing iwlwifi

Well it looks like you have everything there correctly.

I see you already checked for the module loading with #lsmod, so assuming that is so,

as root try #modprobe iwlwifi

If it loads everything should work and you can load the module manually at boot time. see kernel modules

Otherwise report back what output you get and go from there.

Re: [Solved] Help Installing iwlwifi

When have you last upgraded your system? Are you using Arch Linux and not one of its derivatives?

There's an Ubuntu thread here that might be related (of course it might not be related, so don't do anything just yet). You should try upgrading your system...perhaps there was some kind of update to the kernel since 3.18.2 that is the source of the problem.

Re: [Solved] Help Installing iwlwifi

I think you have more than one kernel installed and the module is not available for the kernel you are booting hence modprobe fails. At least that is what I suspect.

what kernels do you have installed?

$ls /usr/lib/modules/

what kernel are you booting (have you just installed a stock kernel I take it as my version here is 3.18.6-1 )

$uname -a

Re: [Solved] Help Installing iwlwifi

Try booting into the newer kernel version (3.18.6-1-ARCH)

check also that the iwlwifi module is in the corresponding /usr/lib/modules/3.18.6-1-ARCH/ directory

confirm you have booted using this kernel version and check the output of the given commands again (you may find the module loads correctly anyway)

Cheers,

Re: [Solved] Help Installing iwlwifi

Your "uname -a" therefore shows you aren't running the correct kernel as you should be seeing "3.18.6-1-ARCH" in the uname command.

The files you have in  /usr/lib/modules/3.18.6-1-ARCH show you have installed the most recent kernel.

Which bootloader are you using? Perhaps you need to manually update it?

If your bootloader is showing a choice of kernel, are you selecting the "3.18.6-1-ARCH" one?

Cheers
Paul

Re: [Solved] Help Installing iwlwifi

The kernel image in Arch is always called "vmlinuz-linux" regardless of the version.

It should not be possible to boot into an older kernel version without using `pacman -U` to downgrade it.

You need to:

# pacman -Syu

I don't know how you've managed to boot up 3.18.2 if you have 3.18.6 installed...

I didn't realise until you pointed this out, coming from Debian I am used to multiple boot entries :-)
I have however two kernels installed although only because I have also installed the LTS kernel giving me a fall back option in case of a kernel upgrade that creates an un-bootable system (I have had this a few times in the past with other distro's but always had an older kernel to boot)
I am somewhat mystified by what has happened here, I don't know if the OP can shed any light?

Re: [Solved] Help Installing iwlwifi

Hopefully OP can. Take us through the steps you followed when installing. Did you only use the arch wiki? Or some other guide you found online? I asked earlier to verify that you're on Arch and not some derivative. The lack of response worries me

Re: [Solved] Help Installing iwlwifi

I was booting into the wrong kernel!
Installed grub-customizer and changed the order.
I am running regular Arch. Followed the beginner's guide but the wifi was not working. Searching around I found issues that others had on earlier kernels not supporting intel 7260. I decided to bite off more than I could chew and compiled a newer kernel but messed up on naming things and changing the default kernel.
Thank you everyone.
