Pulseaudio HDMI 5.1 (or 2.0) sound

Hello,

I have bought a new TV and I want to connect my Zotax ZBox 540 nano plus to that new TV using an HDMI cable.  That TV is connected to my AV receiver using an optical able. Everything works fine except the sound.

I configured pulseaudio to use the HDMI 5.1 profile, I configured pulseaudio to passthrough AC3 and DTS (those checkboxes, "advanced") and that VLC uses the HDMI sound sink. Yet when I try to start VLC with an AC3 encoded audio stream, I get an error in both VLC and pulseaudio and I get no sound on my TV / AV receiver whatsoever.

The pulseaudio error is here:

http://sprunge.us/cjBE

The VLC error is:

pulse error: stream connection failure: Not supported
main error: module not functional
main error: failed to create audio output
main error: Failed to resize display

Don't worry about the pulseaudio network connection. I need more than one user to use pulseaudio, so I configured pa to work over TCP. It prints the same error message if pa and VLC run as the same user.

One weird thing though: My ZBox has an optical output which I could connect to my AV receiver directly. This works fine btw, but sadly my AV receiver has exactly one optical input, so that means either my ZBox or my TV are connected digitally. And this sucks, because I like to use my Smart TVs option to watch Amazon Prime Instant Videos.

So... any ideas what that might be?
