it depend on what video card you use, Ati or nvidia?
you should search pacman -Ss ^ati or pacman -Ss ^nvidia to determine what package shoulde be used.

Or, if you don't have one of the 'big name' video cards, you'll need one of the xf86-video- packages.

Try running hwd -s or hwd -s | grep Video to see what brand of video hardware you have.

Re: how to get proper video drivers for xorg7 [solved]

Cerebral--so that means i can use that to determine what kind of hardware i have, and then look for a driver package that match, i will try that.

i dont have ati or nvidia. i have been trying to get my monitor refresh rate right by editing xorg.conf, but it keeps going to an odd 87Hz, and the screen slightly trembles at this frequency. (i did not know that i do not have installed any video dirvers yet).

I got to kdm, but at 87Hz only. In xorg.conf I tried using vertical sync and horizontal refresh values only, and then commented that and tried modelines only, and then both, but it wont go to 75 Hz, which is what i want.

the modelines and the other configs are not working. i will try installing drivers when i get to boot arch again.

thank you very much  smile

If you don't know what drivers you need and don't care about some extra: they're in the xorg-video-drivers group.

Yup, hwd's a neat little tool that way.  The video packages are fairly intelligently named too, so that if, say, you have a savage card, you'd install xf86-video-savage, etc...

if you don't have hwd you'll have to pacman it (pacman -S hwd)

Re: how to get proper video drivers for xorg7 [solved]

i did the grep command:

hwd -s | grep Video
Video : Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS]|86C326 server: Xorg (vesa)

and i installed the sis drivers through pacman.

do i now need to do anything in xorg.conf?

here is my xorg.conf:

even with this, i am getting 1024x768 at 87Hz, which has some faint horizontal lines all over the screen.

when i remove 1024x768:

SubSection "Display"
        Depth 16
        Modes "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubSection

it goes to 800x600 at 56Hz, which flickers very much.

Re: how to get proper video drivers for xorg7 [solved]

you should change

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Card0"
   Driver "vesa"
   VendorName "All"
   BoardName "All"
EndSection

to

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Card0"
   Driver "sis"
   VendorName "All"
   BoardName "All"
EndSection
