USB devices not showing up in initcpio

I installed Arch on a vfat-formatted USB thumbdrive using vmdk image files (so I can boot the system both from bios and in VirtualBox; used a custom hook for the loopback devices).

I can boot it fine in Virtualbox (both by using the individual vmdks, and by booting a raw vmdk over the entire device).

I run into a problem when I really boot from bios.
         - Grub loads, the USB device shows up and grub can get to the boot image.
         - Once initcpio starts up, it fails searching for the USB, all USB devices are gone (the USB drive doesn't show up at all in /dev, and my USB keyboard won't work).

I have the block and keyboard hooks loaded in, and I cannot for the life of me figure out what I'm missing. Do I need some special mod for USB devices?

EDIT:
So I changed it to a pure USB install (no files, direct on the disk), and I am having the same problem, after grub, in initcpio, all the computers I have tried it on just lose the USB devices. What do I need for mkinitcpio for USB besides block and keyboard?
