Hello!
I have some problems with the ATI proprietary drivers. I found this blog http://henryhermawan.blogspot.ro/2014/1 … 2-for.html and i give it a try.
I know that ATI drivers are a pain in the ... (I will NEVER EVER buy a ATI product)
1) I installed the official drivers, like in the blog says it gives error (about the radeon module is in use)
2) I use the patched, compile, installed with no errors
3) After restart black screen
I logged in terminal, the fglrx module was loaded.
I deleted the old xorg.conf and generate a new one (aticonfig --initial)
The new xorg.conf file

Use older X, version 1.16, it's known that Catalyst produces a nasty segfault with X 1.17.

calin_ionut,
This doesn't answer your question directly, but have you tried the open source drivers? You're running a HD7850 which is well supported with that driver. Sure, you don't go much beyond OpenGL 3.3, but it *should* perform very well otherwise.

Hi skottish. To be honest i have not tried. What i know (from experience with nouveau and nvidia proprietary drivers) the ATI should bring more performance in games.
I use this PC only for games, and i want to test the steam with arch and see how it`s going.
The problem was i installed arch last night and i didn`t have the old xorg in cache, luckly i have the package on the laptop which has arch installed from at least 1 year ![]()
I downgraded xorg from 1.17.1-3 => 1.16.3-2 , created a new xorg file but now i have another errors:

Only thing I hate about free driver is the hustle with PRIME. Otherwise, Catalyst is just a pain in the lower back. If you can get free driver to work, free driver should always be your first choice. It simply is, and by the looks of it, will always be maintained properly, unlike Catalyst which is a huge pile of mess that keeps producing new (or reintroducing old) problems every few months(weeks) whenever there is some system ugrade. On a rolling-release distro, it's simply a pain.
