Xfce4 4.12 bugs ... [main bug understood and worked-around]

I have filed a few bug reports upstream after updating to the 4.12 package currently in [testing].  Short of mirroring the bug reports in our system, I would recommend keeping xfce4 4.12 in [testing] for a while...

Bug relating to power management not waking monitor from sleep: https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11627
Bug relating to xfdesktop not refreshing: https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11620

With 4.10, a reload request reloaded the desktop settings and cycled the wallpaper (if you had your wallpaper set to cycle). The wallpaper cycle was separated from the reload event and now uses the -N (--next) parameter. As far as I can tell, -R (--reload) refreshes the desktop. Is your wallpaper not cycling or are you seeing some sort of other redraw issue?

Correct.  Neither the -N or -R switch refreshes.

You should contact the maintainer directly. There's a chance they'll see it here, but there's a very good chance they won't as well.

Interesting. It works here. What version and build options:

xfdesktop -V

Maybe rename your ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-desktop.xml file while not logged in so that it gets re-created on the subsequent login. If it works, diff the two files to see what is different. (Warning: all of the settings from the Settings Manager >> Desktop will get reset).

Toz-will try it and report the version later.

The bigger bug for me is the one affecting the sleep state of the mentor... Or more specifically, the bug keeping the monitor from waking!

Is your computer a laptop? How are you suspending (closing lid vs using suspend hotkey or menu item)? Do you have a screensaver installed and if so, which one?

Correct. Neither the -N or -R switch refreshes.

both of these work fine here. However, immediately after upgrade no customisation would work.  The solution for me was this:

Re: Xfce4 4.12 bugs ... [main bug understood and worked-around]

@toz - Desktop.  I am not suspending the PC at all.  I do have the screen go into standby mode.  Under 4.10, I did it via xscreensaver.  Under 4.12, xscreensaver didn't wake up so I disabled these features within xscreensaver and enabled them within the xfce4 power managment but it too does not wake up the monitor.  The only thing I can think might be different than some use cases is that my monitor needs to be connected via the a display port, not an HDMI.

@roken - I can try that.  Can you try a test?

1) Point the xfdesktop to a wallpaper, let's call it /foor/bar.jpg
2) Copy over /foo/bar.jpg with any other jpg of your choosing.

Under 4.10, issuing this command would refresh the background by re-reading /foo/bar.jpg and thus change the wallpaper:

DISPLAY=:0.0 /usr/bin/xfdesktop --reload

I can find no such command that works under 4.12.  Does it work for you?

Re: Xfce4 4.12 bugs ... [main bug understood and worked-around]

Monitor power management - what happens if you disable (uncheck) "Handle display power management" on the plugin's Display tab? This should let your DPMS settings do the work with no interference from xfce4-power-manager.

Wallpaper cycling - I'm willing to bet that this use case was not considered in the recent changes. It might be of benefit to the developer to add your last bit to the bug report so he is aware of the use case (copying over a wallpaper to an existing file) so that he can add some sort of check to see if the file has changed and if so, redraw the wallpaper.

Re: Xfce4 4.12 bugs ... [main bug understood and worked-around]

I have a folder of wallpapers, and as far as I can see with 4.12, that's the only option. However:

DISPLAY=:0.0 /usr/bin/xfdesktop --reload

definitely refreshes the desktop (I see the icons flicker) but it doesn't change the wallpaper. Exactly the same behaviour with:

xfdesktop -R

However,

xfdesktop -N

cycles the wallpaper, too.

EDIT:

If you need me to, I can set a single wallpaper in settings editor, but I'm not so sure that would prove anything different, and would be harder to spot (I literally rely on a flicker since trhe reload is so fast)

Re: Xfce4 4.12 bugs ... [main bug understood and worked-around]

Now this is interesting.  I deleted all my xfce4 profiles and rebuilt them.  Now, I can see the power manger functioning correctly and waking up (three times now) correctly EXCEPT when I have xscreensaver running.  WIth xscreensaver running (not managing the power, just running), the display never goes to sleep.  Can anyone else running 4.12 confirm?

1) Enable the power manager to "blank after" 2 min.
2) Set xscreensaver to come on after 1 min.
3) Wait and see the monitor NOT go to sleep.

Just me?

EDIT: Spoke too soon.  Fourth time failed to wake up sad

Re: Xfce4 4.12 bugs ... [main bug understood and worked-around]

Did your test and found that it works (laptop here). However, with the power-manager set to "Handle display power management", the 1 minute xscreensaver setting still kicked in. Perhaps enabling this setting assumes that no screensaver is working. I tested with combinations of both the screensaver enabled and disabled and display management enabled and disabled, and both utilities worked for me.

Note 1: I don't have an issue with the blank screens on resume.
Note 2: I'm running Xfce built directly from git and updated daily - but there have been no xfce4-power-manager updates since 4.12 was released.

Out of curiosity, can you post back your current xfce4-power-manager xfconf settings?

xfconf-query -c xfce4-power-manager -lv

Thanks for the report.  I had to disable [testing] and pacman -Suu to totally downgrade.

That seems to be a known issue. I'd suggest checking the sleep issue again after removing xscreensaver and rebooting.

'xset q' shows that when xscreensaver is run, it will change the DPMS settings to:

DPMS (Energy Star):
  Standby: 7200    Suspend: 7200    Off: 14400
  DPMS is Disabled

Re: Xfce4 4.12 bugs ... [main bug understood and worked-around]

I have a no sleep-issue with light-locker, monitor turns off, but the whole system stays awake because polkit asks for password to go to sleep. Maybe lightlocker and xfce4-power-manager are colliding.

Re: Xfce4 4.12 bugs ... [main bug understood and worked-around]

Since i upgraded to xfce 4.12 from testing repo my laptop has black screen issue. "Suspend when laptop is closed" is enabled in xfce-power-manager settings, after closing lid computer goes to suspend successfully, opening lid wakes up computer but the screen remains black.

I found this Xubuntu bug and tried some potential workarounds (see comments #205 #213 #221),  "xrandr --auto" command brings my screen back but the mouse cursor is still missing.

Suspending my laptop from xfce-logout-menu or from terminal with "systemctl suspend" command or from hardware suspend hotkey works and opening lid brings laptop screen back.

This problem occurs if i just close laptop lid and i think xfce4-power-manager causes this problem.

xfce4-power-manager -V

Re: Xfce4 4.12 bugs ... [main bug understood and worked-around]

I can finally reproduce the blank screen issue on my netbook (laptop and desktop are fine for some reason).

I'll try to see if I can figure out what's causing this behavior.

Hey!  Glad some other folks are experiencing this too... assuming the "black screen" bug is one of the two I reported in the first post of this thread.

Re: Xfce4 4.12 bugs ... [main bug understood and worked-around]

Please test if the issue is resolved with xfce4-settings-4.12.0-2.

The issue reported by Taylan should be solved (seems very similar to the issue with my netbook).

graysky's issue sounds sufficiently different to what I was able to reproduce, so it might not be fixed by this update.

Updated to xfce4-settings-4.12.0-2, blank screen issue seems to be solved, i suspended my laptop several times and after opening lid screen turned on successfully.
