Hi all!
First of all, as an introduction, I came to see this error on my machine for a while, but today I was like "I'm going to fix this", but that didn't help much either.
Anyway, my systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service is getting errors on startup and so it stays. I don't know what's causing the problem, since everything "seems ok". But, nevertheless, here we go:
1. First step, systemctl status:
# systemctl status systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service -l
● systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service - Create Volatile Files and Directories
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service; static; vendor preset: disabled)
Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Wed 2015-03-04 09:10:27 BRT; 3h 38min ago

2. Second step, what's being called by the service file?
...
ExecStart=/usr/bin/systemd-tmpfiles --create --remove --boot --exclude-prefix=/dev
...
3. Read all man files about it.
4. Executed the command from ExecStart by hand, first --remove then --create:
# /usr/bin/systemd-tmpfiles --remove --boot --exclude-prefix=/dev
# # exit 0, ok!
# /usr/bin/systemd-tmpfiles --create --boot --exclude-prefix=/dev

The same error as described by systemctl, so, by reproducing the error is more likely that I can find what's causing it.
5. Edited /usr/lib/tmpfiles.d/systemd.conf, commented out line 35:
...
#A+ /var/log/journal/%m - - - - group:adm:r-x,group:wheel:r-x
...
6. Running commands again:
# /usr/bin/systemd-tmpfiles --remove --boot --exclude-prefix=/dev # yes, i'm repeating
# /usr/bin/systemd-tmpfiles --create --boot --exclude-prefix=/dev
Setting default ACL "u::rwx,g::r-x,g:adm:r-x,g:adm:r-x,g:adm:r-x,g:adm:r-x,g:adm:r-x,g:adm:r-x,g:adm:r-x,g:adm:r-x,g:adm:r-x,g:adm:r-x,g:adm:r-x,g:wheel:r-x,g:wheel:r-x,g:wheel:r-x,g:wheel:r-x,g:wheel:r-x,g:wheel:r-x,g:wheel:r-x,g:wheel:r-x,g:wheel:r-x,g:wheel:r-x,g:wheel:r-x,m::r-x,o::r-x" on /var/log/journal/ebc33a2f542745aca79601b4287fcc15 failed: Argument list too long
Now, I got just one error. Commenting line 34 from the same file:
...
#a+ /var/log/journal/%m - - - - d:group:adm:r-x,d:group:wheel:r-x
...
7. So now, I got no errors, BUT this is not what I want (I'm not supposed to change /usr/lib/tmpfiles.d/*.conf files, right?):
# /usr/bin/systemd-tmpfiles --remove --boot --exclude-prefix=/dev
# /usr/bin/systemd-tmpfiles --create --boot --exclude-prefix=/dev
# ...
8. Removing the comments made in /usr/lib/tmpfiles.d/systemd.conf, the error appears again (as expected).

What am I missing?
I forgot to mention that I'm using testing repositories, and systemd version is 219-2.
Best regards,
Richard.

On my machine, /usr/lib/tmpfiles.d/systemd.conf is only 32 lines long.
Try reinstalling systemd

Indeed, it comes from testing.
Since i don't want to switch to testing, I cannot help you further.

Do you have ACL options enabled in kernel config ?

I see you are all checking to make sure that POSIX ACLs are enabled for ext4. But as a sanity check, are all those having problems actually running on ext4?

/var/log/journal is definitely on an ext4 partition with acl enabled. Seems like a bug.
related thread: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7 … e17fc0f369
I seem to have fixed it by deleting /var/log/journal and creating a new directory.

I updated the kernel today:
$ uname -a
Linux mordor.wrk 3.19.1-1-ck #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Mar 7 11:48:52 EST 2015 x86_64 GNU/Linux
And it still have the ACL flag set:
$ cat /usr/lib/modules/3.19.1-1-ck/build/.config | grep "CONFIG_EXT4_FS_POSIX_ACL"
CONFIG_EXT4_FS_POSIX_ACL=y
And the error still persists:
$ sudo systemctl status systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service -l
● systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service - Create Volatile Files and Directories
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service; static; vendor preset: disabled)
...
Perhaps it is because my /var is not running on EXT4? Or *-ck kernel problem? I'll boot using the stock kernel and update.
Nopes, it's not a *-ck problem.
Later today I'll create an EXT4 fs and rsync my var there to see

This seems like a bug for sure. It all started with systemd-219-r1. I have a post on the gentoo forums about it http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-10 … ight-.html however, not many people using systemd on gentoo. Updating to 3.19.1 did nothing. Only solution I have found is to mask systemd-219-r1. Hopefully this gets fixed upstream.
Oh an btw I am on XFS with all the acl options enabled in my kernel.

Was fixed upstream a while ago.
