Firmware loading path

I'm curious why firmware is loaded from /usr/lib/firmware.
I haven't found udev rules responsible for firmware loading, so my next thought is that kernel loads firmware by itself. ArchWiki only quotes Wikipedia article on that "udev also handles firmware loading".  I'm quite confused.
Even if it is kernel, according to https://kernel.org/doc/Documentation/fi … ass/README, the search path is under /lib/firmware/, not /usr/lib/firmware.
What am I missing? Is there actually nothing in wiki concerning this?
I'm using 3.18.6-1-ARCH (systemd 218-2) with nothing really special.

UPDATE: Nevermind, forgot about the symlink. The question with udev remains.

Re: Firmware loading path

In Arch /lib is a symlink to /usr/lib
