Making Metacity faster?

Even with the speed improvements in Gnome 2.14, Metacity is performing hideously - very sluggish resizing (especially of browser windows), artifacts from dragging windows over each other, etc. Is there a way of getting rid of this stuff without enabling the reduced_resources option in gconf?
