USB scanner stopped working after PC upgrade
I have HP Officejet 4500 all in one printer. It has both USB and ethernet connections.
This week I have upgraded all PC components (so everything is new) except SSD drive so that I was able to continue where I stopped working.
However, my USB connection with printer stopped working.
First of all, I need to say, that I had to make scanner working over ethernet, so now my printer/scanner works without USB, but:
1. what may be the reason to stop USB connection working?
scanimage -L has usually expected output:
scanimage -L

My first guess would be a marginal cable. Is it a quality cable? How long is it?
What is the full output of lsusb ? I want to see some information about the hubs.

Was there a solution to this at all? I have just connected my Epson V600 after a few months of non-use, only to find it also does not work. It had been working fine till I tested it recently so unfortunately I can't say when exactly it stopped working. It's just a case of searching now to see if anyone else has a similar issue.
After much searching and needless Mobo BIOS upgrades, I found that plugging the scanner directly into a USB3 port on the rear of the computer, fixes the issue. I have no idea why as dmesg output shows:
usb 1-1.3: new high-speed USB device number 5 using ehci-pciThis is nothing different from what it was showing all along. There was one thing that I found in the wiki that describes exactly my problem:
If you get a problem where your scanner is detected while running lsusb or scanimage -L and even the GUI apps, however when you attempt to scan, the scanner starts but shortly after hangs or freezes while scanning the following fix may help you.
You may also get this error loged while attempting to scan:
kernel: usb 1-2: new high-speed USB device number 8 using xhci_hcd
kernel: WARNING! power/level is deprecated; use power/control instead
The fix is: In the UEFI/BIOS change the setting under USB configuration, xhci pre-boot mode from enabled to disabled. However I never saw the xhci_hcd message. Mine was always ehci.
Something, somewhere did change in my installation because this scanner was working in any USB port for months until recently.
