how can I create a non-EFI USB installation media

Hi fellows,
I usually create a non-EFI installation CD  via this procedure
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Un … ical_Media

But now my optical drive is broken, so I need to create an USB non-EFI installation media.
How can I do ???

+pc: custom | AMD Opteron 175 | nForce4 Ultra | 2GB ram DDR400 | nVidia 9800GT 1GB | ArchLinux x86_64 w/ openbox
+laptop: Apple | MacBook (2,1) | 2GB ram | Mac OS X 10.4 -> DIED
+ultrabook: Dell | XPS 13 (9343) | 8GB ram | 256GB ssd | FullHD display | Windows 8.1 64bit ArchLinux x86_64 w/ Gnome

I don't know if this is the best solution, but it certainly works.

You basically install GRUB to the USB stick and boot the arch iso from it.

I don't know about the proper way, but I just 'dd' the iso onto a USB key. I then can choose, thru my EFI firmware, to boot the key thru EFI or thru BIOS compatability mode (non-EFI). The iso will boot either way.

Re: how can I create a non-EFI USB installation media

Unfortunately I'm working on a macbook (2,1 model) whom EFI is old and bugged (and this is my need to a non-EFI media...) and doesn't our "vanilla" Installation media!!!

I'll try with the grub solution

Re: how can I create a non-EFI USB installation media

Hello nTia89,

I'm in a similar situation to yours. I have an ancient MacBook Pro (1,1) with a broken optical drive, and any attempts to get EFI boot working with Linux have resulted in no graphics.

My solution has been to first install Mac OS X via USB, then install Refind. After that, Refind will recognise Arch USB media during boot and you can install.
I'm only booting Linux, so my solution has been to use MBR on the hard drive. That forces the machine to use the BIOS compatability mode.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any further questions!

Re: how can I create a non-EFI USB installation media

thank you for your reply!
some days ago my MB is died (I think that optical drive failure was only a "warning" for further bigger issues...) screen is completely black, neither backlight nor image...so, against my will, I abandoned this project

I hope you will add your useful tips in our wiki, at least few lines and
