X1 Carbon 3rd Gen (Issues)

Starting this thread to keep all reported issues and any workarounds regarding this new laptop in one thread.

Trackpad Issues:
So far tes5884 reported the issue in this forums regarding the touchpads not working.
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=192723

I also found the reference to this issue with a "workaround" below:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=88609

Additional key issues:

The multimedia keys relating to F4-F6 and F8-F12 are not issuing any scancodes.  These include Brightness Up, Brightness Down, and Mic Mute.  To be honesty I could care less about the others that I did not mention.  I haven't found anyone reporting this issue yet.  When I press these keys in a virtual terminal I don't see the kernel complain in dmesg or journalctl about Unknown keys being pressed or when running in the Virtual Terminal using the showkey utility.  It's effectively like I'm not even pressing a key hmm  I've tried multiple settings with the acpi_osi between Linux and "!Windows 2012" and no luck.  Kind of stuck here since I'm not seeing anything to troubleshoot.

Re: X1 Carbon 3rd Gen (Issues)

I was able to get the additional function buttons to work by loading the thinkpad_acpi module. Unfortunately it doesn't recognize this hardware model, so it needs to be loaded with force_load=1 module option. Make it permanent with:

echo thinkpad_acpi > /etc/modules-load.d/thinkpad_acpi.conf
echo "options thinkpad_acpi force_load=1" > /etc/modprobe.d/thinkpad_acpi.conf

I will try pacmansyu's tip for the function keys.

UPDATE: This fixes the trackpad buttons alright. But it screws with the touchpad, makes it very jumpy and just reacts weird.

So I disabled it, and I'll wait for a proper fix.

Based on
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=88609
and
http://who-t.blogspot.com.au/2015/01/le … -woes.html

I think we'll have something soon. Besides I don't really mind the touchpad.

Yes, You need to press Function + Esc to get the sticky FN button to work.

In regards to the trackpoint buttons, right now you either get the the trackpoint buttons with proper config using the above and disabling the the trackpad.  A co-worker who got the same model as mine was able to do what you did above, disabling the trackpad, and applied a patch for middle button click to scroll.  I believe he also had to make a modification of that patch as the device in the xorg config mislabels the device for the X1 Carbon Gen3.

Here is the patch in the aur: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/xf86 … rackpoint/

Re: X1 Carbon 3rd Gen (Issues)

Another issue:
BUG: GRUB looks all screwy, the text is showing up as weird boxes etc.
Workaround: uncomment "GRUB_TERMINAL_OUTPUT=console" then issue

grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

If someone has any idea how to actually fix this, so I can load a grub theme, that would be awesome!

Re: X1 Carbon 3rd Gen (Issues)

So are the trackpad buttons working now?  According to the freedesktop bug report - it should be "fixed" at this point. Can anybody confirm that?  I just ordered my own X1 Carbon 3rd Gen and was curious whether or not this is still an issue.

EDIT: Never mind - I see there is a kernel patch that is required as well.  Oh well.  Hopefully that'll hit in 3.20/4.0.

I don't think the fix was pushed out yet - just figured it out.

By the way: the X250 has the exact same problems. Maybe change the title to let other people know.

Re: X1 Carbon 3rd Gen (Issues)

I'm considering buying a X1C3. Can you set charging thresholds with tpacpi-bat (or possibly Tp smapi though I doubt it) and do they actually work?

Thanks!

Re: X1 Carbon 3rd Gen (Issues)

@olebowle: tpacpi-bat works on T450s.

Any chance that the kernel patches for working trackpoint buttons get included on Arch Linux soon? Does it make sense to open a ticket?

No, just wait until upstream releases it, eventually.

The trackpoint buttons will not be included on arch in the near future.  I've been watching various kernel.org branches, and (as of last night) the changes aren't even in Linux-Next, or any feeder branches into linux-next.

I'll poke the author to see what the news is.

Author says that the trackpad fixes should be integrated into linux-next sometime next week.  There is a kernel.org branch which has these changes already integrated.

remember, you need bleeding edge xf86-input-synaptics too (I got mine raw git, not through any aur packages).

Re: X1 Carbon 3rd Gen (Issues)

Good to know there is an upcoming fix for the trackpoint buttons issue.

I've run into another issue regarding switching to virtual terminals while using a custom modeline in xorg.  I've got the 1080p FHD screen with my X1 Carbon and I've got a custom modeline setup for 1600x900x60.  Once I switch to that modeline in xorg (which happens as soon as I log in as that is my preferred resolution) switching to a virtual terminal works, but produces jittery graphics.  Most of the time, switching back to XOrg works fine, but sometimes it will get wonky.  I've found that if I use the native panel resolution this isn't an issue.  I imagine that's what most people are doing as I haven't heard about this issue anywhere yet.  Grabbing the latest xf86-video-intel-git package didn't resolve the situation either.

Edit: This behavior is not 100% consistent.  For instance I rebooted 20 minutes ago and switching to a virtual terminal works without issue for the moment.  Go figure.

Edit 2: Then I opened Steam and tried to switch again and the issue is back.  It remains after closing Steam.

Is that a no? According to https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/tp … ed_Laptops it may work on all Thinkpads with Ivy Bridge and newer. It would be great if someone with a X1C3 could actually test it.

Re: X1 Carbon 3rd Gen (Issues)

It is a "very very probable", as X1C3 and T450s are of the same generation hardware wise.

Well, I initially stated it didn't work.
Then I decided to try tpacpi-bat-git and then it did work (on X1C3)! Great success!

Re: X1 Carbon 3rd Gen (Issues)

Anybody else having issues with the mic? Seems to be muted in hardware. The light is on on the mic mute button. Pressing it produces events though doesn't affect the light (the output mute button is affected by pressing it). I can't find a combination of alsa settings that pics up audio. Aside from the trackpoint buttons, this seems to be the only thing I've tried that I haven't got working now.

Nope, works perfectly for me.  I turn it on and off via FN+F4, did my first google voice search via this mic.

On a separate issue, Linus just picked up the trackstick kernel patch into the 4.0 kernel yesterday.  Looks like the trackstick fix has been fastpathed smile yay
