Random mouse freezes after upgrade

After my weekly upgrade yesterday, I get random mouse freezes frequently. Now when I move the mouse, about every 10s, it freezes. It seem to affect the keybard as well. Is it the xorg upgrade or kernel issue?

Re: Random mouse freezes after upgrade

Is there anything in dmesg, journalctl, etc.? What kind of mouse and keyboard? I have a logitech wireless mouse and keyboard that use the same unifying usb. After an upgraded I started getting random freezes that lasted a few seconds and it was really annoying. I spent a lot of time troubleshooting, going through packages, changing batteries...it turned out to be some loose connections inside the box. That it started to happen after an upgrade was just a coincidence. Sorry for the ramble, but that took me dozens of hours to figure out! Maybe you can rule that out before you go crazy as well.

Thanks. I didn' t find anything in logs. It first happens to my logitech wireless mouse and keyboard. Then I tried with wired mouse and it still freezes. I now installed linux-lts and it doesn' t freeze any more. So I suspect it is a kernel issue.

Re: Random mouse freezes after upgrade

Is anyone having problems with other input devices than Logitech?

For myself, after the recent kernel upgrade I no longer can use my Logitech Touchpad T650 at all, which is devastating for me since I have accessibility issues that make it the only pointing device I can use.
I checked and it registers to something in dmesg, the unifying receiver still works with the regular mouse I plugged in, and if I "$cat /dev/input/mouse1", I can still see that the touchpad is still communicating input quite effectively. As for why I can no longer use the mouse, I'm puzzled but I have yet to try another DE or kernel.

Re: Random mouse freezes after upgrade

FWIW, after upgrading to linux 3.19.2-1 I too notice my wireless mouse

Bus 002 Device 002: ID 046d:c52b Logitech, Inc. Unifying Receiver
  idVendor           0x046d Logitech, Inc.

intermittenly hanging for a few seconds after a breif period of inactivity, each time producing this line in dmesg:

pci_pm_runtime_suspend(): hcd_pci_runtime_suspend+0x0/0x60 [usbcore] returns -16

and returning to normal function only after it's wiggled about.

Looks like a power management issue and, sure enough, appears to happen only when running on battery.

Enough is more.

Re: Random mouse freezes after upgrade

Everytime powertop enables some pm for the Unifying i have the mouse hang, if you have powertop check if pm is enabled for the receiver (GOOD tag) and try to revert that to BAD.

Thanks, it seems to work. Was wondering how to incorporate that into my powersaving script, at least until the next kernel upgrade. Eventually noticed that when you toggle GOOD/BAD powertop briefly tells you what it's doing, e.g.,

echo 'on' > '/sys/bus/usb/devices/1-1/power/control'

  near the top line -- doh!  If the Logitech device is found in the same location on the usb bus after every boot, that will serve as a convenient workaround.

[edit] Seems to change location randomly at boot, so trying my luck with:

# find current location of USB device "Logitech, Inc. Unifying Receiver"
DEV_ID=046d:c52b
DEV=$(/usr/bin/lsusb -d $DEV_ID |cut -d " " -f4)
DEV=$(echo $DEV |sed s/00// |sed s/://)
# disable this device's power management
echo 'on' > /sys/bus/usb/devices/$DEV-1/power/control

[days later, argh] Reliable, or so it seems:

DEV_ID=046d:c52b
DEVBUS=$(/usr/bin/lsusb -d $DEV_ID |cut -d " " -f2)
DEVBUS=$(echo $DEVBUS |sed s/00//)
echo 'on' > /sys/bus/usb/devices/$DEVBUS-1/power/control

Re: Random mouse freezes after upgrade

Same problem here.

Do you use conky with lm_sensors ?
or
When you run sensors in roxterm the mouse freeze for 3s?

Equipment: Dell Studio 1555, AMD Graphics HD4500, linux 3.19.2

Re: Random mouse freezes after upgrade

In case anyone else wants to delete a  workaround  no longer needed: the upgrade to linux 4.0.1-1 fixes the problem for me. It's possible the thread can be marked [SOLVED].

I' ve tried linux 4.0.2 and all workarounds above, none of them working for me.

Re: Random mouse freezes after upgrade

Certainly shouldn't mark as solved, no updates, upgrades, or workarounds have fixed the problem for me at all. I had to switch mouses entirely because of this.

Re: Random mouse freezes after upgrade

Linux 4.2.3-1 here. Problem still exists.  Any idea for some workaround?
I'm using Logitech, Inc. Unifying Receiver

Re: Random mouse freezes after upgrade

Logitech G300 (wired) and Linux 4.2.5-1 x86_64 here, and the problem seems to be increasing in frequency!

Edit:

My system is a desktop so I don't have any of the power management utilities that others have described as problematic on laptops.

Also, fortunate to find that re-plugging in the mouse gets it responding again, as a workaround. Any idea if I can modprobe something to avoid the physical nature of this workaround though?

Re: Random mouse freezes after upgrade

After moving my mouse to a USB 2 port (previously it was on USB 3), the freezing hasn't recurred in a long while. I'm hoping this is the solution for me and am keeping my blooming fingers crossed!

Same here.  May it be somewhat connected to the wheel acceleration?
The best (but troublesome) solution for me is pulling off and back on the receiver to the USB port - but after reboot/shutdown the problem reoccurs.
