Unable to start xorg after latest nvidia update

Hi,
I have NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 card. I did update to version 346.47 of nvidia driver and figured out that after reboot SDDM dont start. I disabled login manager and tried to start xorg server manually but without success. I see that there is segmentation fault in log but don't understand where it comes from exectly.
Output of /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

In addition, in order to disable sddm I downloaded latest Arch linux installation CD (2015.02.01) but I was unable to start PC with this version. Loading stuck after first 3 lines, after "triggering udevevents".
I had old version 2014.08 and it worked ok.

Thanks,
Alexey

Re: Unable to start xorg after latest nvidia update

Running a gtx 680 and i have the same problem after the update.

blank screen on tty1 where sddm is meant to start... all my other ttys are accessible though.

In the journal i'm getting the error;

sddm [616]: Auth: sddm-helper exited with 127

Re: Unable to start xorg after latest nvidia update

I have the same issue after the last update on my nVidia Quadro 1000m (Thinkpad W520 laptop).

Re: Unable to start xorg after latest nvidia update

Nullified suggested I post my solution to a recent nvidia / gdm / xorg problem I encountered when I upgraded Arch today Feb 28 2015. Our PCs are GTX 970 and GTX 750 Ti SC
--
For some reason the upgrade to nvidia 346.47 failed on both my wife's and my PCs. We weren't able to load GDM and were stuck on the systemd boot status screen.

# I made sure to reinstall GDM and nVidia
sudo pacman -S gdm nvidia nvidia-utils nvidia-libgl lib32-nvidia-utils lib32-nvidia-libgl

# Rebuild Init CP IO
mkinitcpio -p linux

# Rebuild GRUB
sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

For some reason this fixed both of our Arches, I think perhaps the kernel module for nVidia might have needed to be rebuilt on the 346.47 version and that may have been missing from the upgrade package.

Re: Unable to start xorg after latest nvidia update

Thanks ElectricPrism... I can confirm this solved my problem!  I substituted sddm for gdm in your example above & it still worked.

Funnily enough, I'd already reinstalled the nvidia, nvidia-utils & sddm packages and run the mkinitcpio -p linux initially.... must be something with one of those other drivers there that wants re-installation!

Thanks again smile

Why is the nouveau driver referenced in your log?

Re: Unable to start xorg after latest nvidia update

I'm having the exact same backtrace, and I have tried ElectricPrism's solution without any improvements.

Does anyone have any other leads on this, or should I just revert to an older version of nvidia? Actually I fixed this by adding nomodeset to my kernel parameters.

Re: Unable to start xorg after latest nvidia update

I just wanted to echo eugeneyche's comment. I ran the same steps mentioned by ElectricPrism but that didn't really fix them. I had to add nomodeset to my kernel parameters. I now want to know what's really going on. For the record, this was my backtrace:

Re: Unable to start xorg after latest nvidia update

I hope this is not considered necromancy. Sorry if it is.

I had the same backtrace. This answer from gentoo's forums fixed it for me : http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1010746.html (the part about AccelMethod)

I changed this section to add the AccelMethod option :

Section "Device"
    Identifier "intel"
    Driver "modesetting"
    BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
    Option "AccelMethod" "none"
EndSection

Not sure I can explain what this does though and no time to investigate.

Re: Unable to start xorg after latest nvidia update

I got this same "OsLookupColor" segfault. However I started getting it after adding 'xcompmgr &' to my .xinitrc. Once I removed that again the stcktrace was gone. Just FYI.

Thanks for sharing that information. However, since this topic is old, I'm going to close it now.
