iwlwifi card unable to associate to unencrypted AP

Problem:
Can not get my WLAN to associate with an open wifi access point. No error returns

My situation:
Platform: Lenovo Thinkpad X220 w/8GB ram
Software environment: Arch Linux 64 fully updated, on Xfce
Network management: netctl with no hook to systemd. I used wifi-menu only. But resorted to troubleshooting as below.
WLAN: Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000 BGN (confirmed to be using iwlwifi driver)

Procedure to repeat:
Poweron and login as root to console
Bring interface up with #ip link set wlp3s0 up
Prove it is up with #ip link show wlp3s0
attempt scan #iw dev wlp3s0 scan - which shows  the AP I want (open, nonencrypted).
attempt association with open AP - iw dev wlp3s0 connect "MYESSID", which returns no error
prove status of association - #iw dev wlp3s0 link which returns "No connection"

What am I doing wrong above?

Known facts:
1. On Win7 dual boot, WLAN card works.
2. Debian derived live cd works
3. March 2015 Arch live media fails.
4. Wireless works with just about ANY USB wifi adaptor I have tried, but why not the internal one?
5. I believe this card or a close variant is in my other old Thinkpads, and all have same problem under Arch.

I would really appreciate any tips, or links to other info.
Tks in advance.
Steve.

Re: iwlwifi card unable to associate to unencrypted AP

I don't see anything you do wrong in your troubleshooting. I can also confirm that said centrino chip works absolutely flawless in other cases.

What's the exact PCI-ID and revision of your chip? Does the output of

dmesg |grep iwlwifi

show the firmware (version 39.31.* currently) is loaded?
