Alsamixer doesn't recognise sound card capture controls

I cannot get my sound card to record from the 6.3mm jack input.
My sound card is a "SOUND BLASTER X-FI HD", and

arecord -l

gives:

However, when I run alsamixer, select my sound card with "f6", and then examine the capture controls using "f4", it says "This sound device does not have any capture controls". However, when I open Pavucontrol, and select the "Input Devices" tab, I get one device for "USB Sound Blaster HD Analog Stereo", however, it is completely silent, regardless of the volume I specify.

The output device of the USB Sound Blaster HD does work, however.
