X taking one minute to display kdm login. [solved]

Recently installed Arch, new to arch, but not to Linux in general.

My system installed fine, and KDE is running OK, nice and fast starting up (I added x:5:respawn:/opt/kde/bin/kdm to /etc/inittab).

I had a font problem, the fonts were too small, especially for GTK apps like Firefox, etc.  I remembered solving this in previous distros, so I did the following:

pacman -Sy xorg-fonts-100dpi
pacman -Sy xorg-fonts-75dpi

I then added the following line to the Monitor section of my xorg.conf:

DisplaySize 260 195

so that when I run xdpyinfo | grep resolution, it shows that I'm running 100dpi.

The problem is, that when the system boots, it takes around one minute before I get the kdm login.  The screen remains black with the mouse cursor, so I know X has loaded, but there seems to be a severe delay.  I never had this problem before the 100dpi fonts were installed.  I had a feeling in might be something to do with the fact I cannot load the X Font Server at boot, so wondered maybe it's because when X is loaded, it's first loading the X Font Server before the kdm login is displayed.

Does anyone know how I can get this resolved, so that it will start fast again like previously?

Re: X taking one minute to display kdm login. [solved]

One thing I forgot.  If I choose runlevel 3 instead, X starts fast.  So this must have something to do with kdm login or something.

I prefer to run at runlevel 5, so this is a bit of a disappointment.

I had the same issue but when I installed the dummy pkg 'xorg' and followed the Xorg7 wiki page instructions to the letter the login problem was resolved.

Re: X taking one minute to display kdm login. [solved]

I installed the dummy package near the beginning when "startx" didn't exist.  I have also checked everything related to the xorg7 link you posted, and still get the problem.

This is my xorg.conf:

Your Xorg.conf looks quite weird for i810 drivers roll Where are the FontPath, RgbPath and modules path ???
Compare it to mine @ http://arch.pastebin.com/613767

Try hwd...

pacman -S hwd
hwd -x
cp /etc/X11/xorg.xonf.hwd (i think) /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Re: X taking one minute to display kdm login. [solved]

Ah you found me  big_smile

Yes, I thought it might be best to post it here as well, since it's arch and we don't get many arch users on the other one.

I've subsequently done the hwd -x and it's not worked either.  Still takes almost 1 minute to start.

As I said before, at runlevel 3, I can log into the system, type startx and it starts no problem, nice and fast.  It just seems to be when at runlevel 5, that it takes ages for the kdm login to appear.  I think x must be configured correctly.

you'd think so, wouldn't ya?

perhaps it's an issue w/kdm...have you tried switching to a different display manager (xdm, gdm) to see if it starts up faster?  this is just a trouble shooting step, obviously not a solution.

Re: X taking one minute to display kdm login. [solved]

One other thing to note.  xdm works perfectly fine and loads and displays in about 2 or 3 seconds.  So it must be a kdm issue.

I don't like xdm, I want kdm to work tongue

Re: X taking one minute to display kdm login. [solved]

I even tried running /opt/kde/bin/genkdmconf to see if this would make a difference.

Unfortunately, it's not faster.  Weird thing is before I installed the 100dpi fonts and xfs that was a dependency and some others, this all ran perfectly fine!!!!!

Here's my xorg.conf after the hwd -x.  It's definitely kdm related, since xdm works fine, but I don't like it.  Surely kdm should work fine.

Re: X taking one minute to display kdm login. [solved]

Suggest you watch the install sequence of KDE to find which segment is taking so much time to execute...

Go from there..........

Re: X taking one minute to display kdm login. [solved]

Just a random suggestion.

Check that the 'lo' interface is being enabled, aka loopback.

run ifconfig at console to check, if it isnt, enable it in rc.conf.

Here's the output:

Loopback definitely there.  It's happening to me on two machines, so not sure what's wrong.

I've checked the xorg.0.log file and there's no errors whatsoever.

Re: X taking one minute to display kdm login. [solved]

My /etc/hosts is just as follows:

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
10.1.1.4 elise.buziaks.com elise

pretty normal stuff tongue

Anyway, I've been thinking about this last night when I was installing a Red Hat Mail Server for a client.  So when I got home this morning at about 7.30am and had a few hours sleep, I started with a thought I had.  So, I'll explain, trust me, it's worth reading for the solution - at least I hope it is! tongue

When I had initially built my system, I just did a base install, followed by the following commands:

pacman -Syu (twice, once to upgrade pacman, the other rest of system after base install)
pacman -Sy kde

After doing this, I'd tried to run startx, and it wasn't there, so I'd next done:

pacman -Sy xorg

which pulled in a few other things.  I got startx then.  My initial xorg.conf had been created using:

xorgcfg -textmode

and when I'd tried to startx it failed saying it couldn't find the i810 module, and also failed about something called Speedo.  Anyway, I just installed xf86-video-i810 and that got me underway.  System was OK, font's a bit iffy, but that was when I installed the 100dpi fonts, and got my problem.  After this I had tried Xorg -configure, hwd -x as mentioned in this post, and still had the slowness of one minute.

After a few hours sleep this morning, I came back to my machine and remembered the thought about the speedo error.  I checked my xorg.conf, but it doesn't mention speedo, so I thought it can't be that.  Or can it.  So the next thing I did was:

pacman -Sy font-bitstream-speedo

and this installed.  I checked the xorg.conf file, and nope, still no mention of it.  However kdm now starts within about 5 seconds, which is really cool.

So, the lack of errors in my xorg logfile, the correct xorg.conf and yet, just missing these little speedo fonts, was what it seems to me, to be the cause of the problem.

I hope this is of some help to anyone in the future that has this sort of problem.

Re: X taking one minute to display kdm login. [solved]

I think you can remove those fonts now tongue
Why? I think that when you installed those fonts the font database was updated. I don't have those fonts and kdm starts quite fast.

post_install() {
echo -n "Updating font cache... "
  usr/bin/fc-cache
  echo "done."
}

You can find it in file for that package in CVS:
http://cvs.archlinux.org/cgi-bin/viewcv … am-speedo/
