tty black after startx

Hi,

I have installed Arch Linux on my MacBook Mid 2009.
This MacBook has Nvidia graphics GPU(s): GeForce 9400M and 9600 GT
My research told me that the mac is not utilizing the Nvidia optimus technology so I didn't install that.

I installed the xorg-server and xorg-xinit packages as well as nvidia-340xx and nvidia-libgl.
Then I configured the X11 system as described in NVIDIA

In addition I installed i3 wm but the problem I have exists without i3 as well.

That much to my system, now to my problem:

As soon as i 'startx' the X11 starts up just fine and I can use it. But from this point on my original shell is not available anymore. If i switch to another tty with ctrl+alt+Fx the sceen is just black. If I quit X11 the screen just stays black.
The shell is still responding so I can type commands and they are executed but I can't see them.

In another thread I read the command 'reset' helped another user with a similar problem but it does nothing for me.

I suspect the problem is the driver which is loaded when X11 starts and replaces the previously used driver?
I am quite new to linux but am willing to learn fast and try everything you throw at me.

Thans for your help in advance

Stefan

Re: tty black after startx

To ensure that others perusing the boards who may be able to help understand what is going on, you should edit your post and change the title ot reflect the fact that it is your TTYs (or consoles) that are not working.

It might be worth searching on that term as well for Macs and Nvidia (using the proprietary drivers).

Re: tty black after startx

Well I searched for black tty with Nvidia drivers (don't know why but until now I never searched with tty).
And the general advise is to install the nouveau.
If I do that as explained in the wiki the system just hangs after startx.

Re: tty black after startx

What is in Xorg's log when it hangs?

Re: tty black after startx

Did you remove xorg.conf before trying out Nouveau?

Re: tty black after startx

Hi,

yes I did remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Is there another conf I need to delete somewhere?

None I know of, except  if NVIDIA proprietaries put something in xorg.conf.d .

Re: tty black after startx

Hi,

in case somebody else stumbles upon this thread:
I was able to fix the crash with nouveau by adding

Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Driver "nouveau"
    Option "noaccel" "on"
EndSection

to the xorg.conf in the section. The part that fixed it is the Option "noaccel" "on" part.

As for the black ttys with the nvidia drivers I don't have a solution yet but research tells me that is a problem with the ttys using a framebuffer which the nvidia driver can't handle after initilization.

Greetings
Stefan

Check this out: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Uvesafb

Re: tty black after startx

I think this can be marked as [SOLVED]?

Re: tty black after startx

Not really,

I found a solution for the nouveau driver Problem. But I still want to solve my original problem with the nvidia drivers. I am still in search of a solution.
I will give it one more week of research, then I will mark this as solved (or unsolvable?) and only updated if I happen to find a solution later on

Greetings

Stefan

Re: tty black after startx

But have you followed jasonwryan's suggestion to try uvesafb? It at least works for me – though under still a different setup – with the nVidia proprietary drivers.

Re: tty black after startx

Oh, sorry I never wrote back here, did I?

Yes I tried the suggestion but it doesn't change anything. The behavior is exactly as before. And I checked, that the new FB is loaded.

Re: tty black after startx

Maybe this helps in xorg.conf:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Driver "nvidia"

# Setting ProbeAllGpus to false prevents the new proprietary driver
# instance spawned to try to control the integrated graphics card,
# which is already being managed outside bumblebee.
# This option doesn't hurt and it is required on platforms running
# more than one nvidia graphics card with the proprietary driver.
# (E.g. Macbook Pro pre-2010 with nVidia 9400M + 9600M GT).
# If this option is not set, the new Xorg may blacken the screen and
# render it unusable (unless you have some way to run killall Xorg).
    Option "ProbeAllGpus" "false"
EndSection

Re: tty black after startx

You need to use bumblebee for that ofcourse.
