Hello,
I've been using Gnote together with tint2 without any problems. After upgrading Gnote 3.14.0 → 3.16.0 the tray icon has vanished. All the search results I've come across say that changing
gsettings set org.gnome.gnote use-status-icon trueshould resolve the issue, but it does NOT work on my system (changing other keys with gsettings for gnote works, however).
It says in the changelog that the icon has been removed, even though people state that this can be revoked by using the aforementioned command. What troubles me is that it doesn't work on my system (neither as user / super user). Here is some brief info:
https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-a … 00007.html
Has anybody else noticed any changes in behaviour in Gnote 3.16.0?

I use trayer (I have no DE) and the tray icon has indeed gone. The gsettings setting doesn't work for me either.
I've downgraded to 3.14.0-1 for the time being but will investigate an alternative in case of necessity.

Perhaps the gsettings thing I mentioned was for an earlier version of Gnote, that was in some transitional state of having the icon removed*. Now, in 3.16.0 the icon seems to actually have been removed. The horror (
). Why anyone would want to remove useful features is beyond me. Might have something to do with Gnote getting adapted to Unity*.
Thanks for confirming this, anyway! Atleast now I know that my installation isn't messed up.
Maybe it would be a good idea to kindly request the icon back from the developers. Or if anybody knows how to make the icon to reappear again, then you are welcome to shed some light on this matter. ![]()
*) Speculations.
Edit:
Fixed a typo.

The old tray icons used xembed. In a native wayland and Mir world the xembed based tray icons probably need to be replaced with something else or removed.
According to the gnome shell debugger Gnote is running as a native wayland app so the tray probably was removed to make this possible.

I ditched Gnome when 3 was released. From what I've read the developers aren't exactly open to user feedback.
Cairo-dock has a plugin for using Gnote but that doesn't work correctly with 3.16.0 so that's not an option for me either.

Thank you for all the explanations! Okay, then I guess the prospects of using Gnote are pretty grim.
Unless your system is running Unity, that is... Blä.

I too was hit with the new problem in gnote-3.16 where the systray icon has been intentionally removed.
What frustrated the workflow more is that gnote-3.16 often segfaults when notes are deleted.
So in looking around for alternative desktop notes applications I found that gnote is just a fork of the awesome tomboy note application.
Installed tomboy and it is in every way identical to the gnote of old.
It's systray icon works just fine and it's stable.
Furthermore I was able to instantly migrate my existing gnote notebooks over to tomboy by doing:
cp ~/.local/share/gnote/*.note ~/.local/share/tomboy/Hope this helps resolve for you ![]()
