Just tried to get my mic working today for use with mumble and after turning it on in ALSA It started making awful screeching noises and generally awful sounds that made my ears bleed. After about 15 minutes of twiddling all the nobs and another hour of looking for other posts and help from IRC I have resorted to asking on here because this kind of sound quality from a microphone could be a real deal breaker for me with Arch Linux. I honestly have no clue what other information that you might need to solve this but hopefully this is sufficient enough for now.
Note: Headset mic so feedback is not from speakers and the microphone works perfectly fine on Windows

Can people actually hear you? You might have the wrong microphone port selected.

Can you post screenshots of alsamixer "Capture" (F4) section? I had a heck of a time getting my headset mic to work properly too, but it seems good now. Sounds like you played with all the knobs already, but just make sure none of the "Boosts" are too high.
Is it a USB headset?

It's plugged into the rear microphone jack. From the mumble audio wizard I can hear the audio that comes through and what can hear of my voice is being drowned out by the noise.
edit: Sorry about the massive image (also I turned of what little boost there was in this shot but it had been at 22 previously)
edit2: After switching to front microphone port the noise disappeared but there was a lot of echo. All audio played the software would put through the microphone and echo over and over again

I've never used mumble, but I'm wondering if you installed jack and if it would help somehow.
Did you try something else? e.g. Google Hangout or Skype with someone. I've found that when I use arecord, for example, the playback sounds like crap, but when I Skype or Hangout with others, they say my audio sounds fine.
