cant record in stereo , mono input (aux in) intel ALC270 [Solved]

Hi there, i've been reading the forum but i cannot get the right answer to this issue.

I am trying to capture audio with the microphone input connector.

I tried it using audacity (as i always did with other distros but now is not working) and with this command arecord -vv -fdat foo.wav

The thing is, i always end up with a mono audio file. I see in alsamixer the input/capture connector is stereo, i can see the Left and Right volume levels
but modifing those make no difference.

Something seems to tell the whole system to translate the stereo microphone into a mono microphone or something like that... i am no quiet sure, cause in audacity the recording track shows a stereo track although both channels have the same audio track, the right channel one...


i was using this same computer not long ago with fedora, and for like 2 years with slackware and always worked fine... i've been using archlinux for 4 months now and i came across with this while trying to rip some new cassettes i got.

"Mic" is a mono channel - whether this mono signal is duplicated to left/right depends whether you record to a mono or stereo track and is expected behaviour.

On the vast majority of consumer sound cards the "mic socket" (mono) doubles up as the "line in socket" (stereo) you may just need to select and un-mute an alternate input in alsa or audacity.

A cheap USB audio interface may be a better solution to rip audio cassettes than the, albeit classic analog old skool, method or playing them down a (mono) microphone.

Hi pal, thanks for your answer.

The input i am using is the "aux in" , is not mono because i already did what i am trying to do in the past and the results were ok.

Buying an external USB  audio interface is pointless due to that.

I am not sure what's causing the issue but i know is not the input nor the sound card, is the intel driver, alsa, pulseaudio or something else which i cannot figure out.

please guide me to list which configuration is needed to know.

I haven't changed anything from any alsa or pulse configuration file. They are as they came by default.

I just added the modprobe rule for setting the model of a ALC270 sound card in /etc/modprobe.d/snd-hda-intel.conf
with this content:

options snd-hda-intel model=laptop-amic

anyway, i tried that model and also with auto and no answer...

This is in an asus a55a

Apart from a harmless kernel warning:

and an unresolved, but fixable, wifi driver anomaly:

Your alsa appears to be working as it should - which rather leaves bad driving as the cause of your woe.

I can only suggest that you double check that any cable you are running between devices is in fact a "stereo" cable and that you try an alternate (stereo) software input from which to record from.

If you have pavucontrol installed it may be easier to select the correct input from that GUI in the audacity device dropdowns.

satanselbow: i installed pavucontrol , it shows the same i see in alsa... now i see the name of the device which says Monitor of Analogical Internal Audio Stereo, which is named as Stereo... but it only captures one channel.
Changed the cable, holy impaled christ, was the cable.
Sorry for making you waste your time pal, i already tried the other cable with another stereo and was working well, may be was the movement, what an ass i am. Thank you very mcuh again for helping me out!
