Hello Arch users,

My name is Mike, and I have been using Arch on my main workstation for the past few weeks. It has been a lot of fun so far. I have run into some problems, but I have been able to search through the wiki and find answers. Solving problems and having that challenge I think is what makes Arch fun for me. So far I have settled on using MATE as my desktop of choice. I also like XFCE. Anyway, I'm happy to be an Arch user!

Well...Welcome to Arch! I haven't used any of those two because I use AwesomeWM but have fun! Arch will be a great experience and a way to learn also.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi everyone;

I've been using Arch on my netbook for a very long time, but only got around to installing it on my main computer (an MSI GT780DX) a few days ago.  It's been a challenge, but thanks to a lot of google and Arch wiki, I nearly have things the way I like it. I settled on KDE (my netbook runs XFCE). I think I prefer Arch with KDE over Kubuntu or Fedora w/KDE because pacman is practically perfect, and the AUR is amazing.

I still have a couple of nagging problems, but meh. Hopefully with your guys' help I can sort them out.

Edit: HOLY SHIT I joined in 2011! I have learned nothing hmm When I first dabbled with Arch, I don't recall using systemd, and installing didn't involve chroot... I really have learned nothing.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi Everyone! Sumit Bhardwaj (pronounced Soo-me-t Bha-ra-dva-j) from Mumbai, India. I switched to Arch 3 days back and am loving the experience so far (although setting it up to the way i like it was a little bit of challenge, being a new comer to the Arch Way) .  I have been a long time Linux user (since around 2001), primarily working on Fedora/RHEL/OpenSUSE side of things with occasional detours into Debian/Ubuntu/Mint world. I occasionally contribute to Fedora project as well. Gnome is my favorite DE, KDE being second and XFCE third. I am using Gnome 3.16 as of now.

My reason for switching are many. One is Arch's increasing popularity (specially on Google+ groups), almost everybody seems to be using it so it made me curious. When I studied a little, I found the Arch's way of keeping things simple and giving the power back to system user to configure their system precisely to their own liking. Secondly, I like to remain on the bleeding edge side of things (the reason I was a fedora user for so long) and Arch is a step ahead of Fedora in that way. I was worried a little about stability, but I got 100% positive reviews from all the users I know and past 3 days usage gave me similar idea. If I stay with the non-testing repos, keep reading the mailing list and news section and dont do updates mindlessly, there are close to none chances that I will mess up my system . And third thing is the community. Before installing, I browsed around the forums, read the wiki, got subscribed to the mailing lists etc. The community seemed quite vibrant and helping. And it is growing at very good rate.

So all this helped me make my mind up, I talked  to my wife and took permission to ruin her weekend plans big_smile and installed/configured the system over the weekend. All I can say is it was completely worth it, even after that extra dress I had to buy for my wife ;-D

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello all! I’ve been tinkering with Arch for a few days until I today learned the hard lesson of not checking forums before updating packages... gdm crash on boot wink

Anyways, great project you’ve got going here. I’m looking forward to following its development, though I’m too much of a noob developer to contribute myself, but I will report bugs when I think I can be informative enough.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everyone! My name's Dave and I've been a lifelong Windows user. Maybe a year ago I switched to Ubuntu on ye olde Thinkpad because I started teaching myself scripting languages and programming languages and I've heard good things about working on GNU/Linux. So Ubuntu was great but after a while with it I figured I could handle installing a less training-wheelsie sort of distro and went with this because everyone seems to love it, said it was very simple and powerful and great for learning the ins and outs of Linux. And so far it is all of those things. I spent almost a week and a half installing Arch. It was crazy. Most of my problems came from me not completely reading the beginner's guide/ installation tutorial sections of the Arch Wiki. I've found in the last month I've spent on Arch that it's been extremely rewarding and it's definitely a distro I'll stick with for myself at home for a long time. As an ex-Windows guy I'm going through a big mental shift of course, but I know that any problems can be solved given enough effort, and I respect people's time and trouble spent helping myself and others.

Hello everyone!
I joined the Arch side of the force about 4 years ago, but didn't bother to sign up till today.
(I distro hopped for a bit during Arch's "move" to systemd)

Also, everyone knows the only desktop the cool people use is Xfce.
You tiling wm folks are fooling yourselves.  wink

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hey all. I'm Chris. I bought an SSD for my desktop and decided to make a switch over to Arch from Fedora while I was doing the transfer over. I'm still running a Fedora server, because they work great headless, but I grew tired of the new Fedora flavours and missing out on some great stuff in the Arch repos.

Besides, I get most of my learns on Arch forums and wiki anyway. I figured if I'm going to suck up information I may as well use Arch too. smile

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everyone!
I am Lahan from Switzerland.
I've met Linux in late 90's and I've been a regular user since 2008 and I changed definitely and 100% to Linux in 2012.
I started with Ubuntu 8 and then I've tryed Debian, Linux Mint, Fedora and OpenSUSE and went back to Ubuntu until last week, when I got the courage to put my hands on Arch Linux with XFCE, Compiz and Conky. Until now I am very pleased with Arch. It is very fast and flexible.
For the time being, Arch Linux is the best!

Best regards to all Archers!

Hi everyone,

Nearly new to linux (used Fedora at work a few years ago but just as a "end-user") I decided to switch to arch in order to try and understand things a bit better.

Cheers,

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi every one,

I'm new to the Forum, but use ArchLinux for some times now.
I didn't posted since today, and now it's done and that's a good thing, because the forum is a good start to contribute to the community.
In the future, i would like to learn creating a package, specially an AUR package. That would be an important step, if i do it.

I think the hello thread is something important to show how much activity there is aroud ArchLinux community.

Good play with this distro for everyone.

Rone.
