[SOLVED] Plymouth 0.9.2-2 prevents GDM/KDM from loading; flickers.

Hello everyone.

I just upgraded to systemd 219 (April 19, 2014) and now my system is not usable. After a reboot I am shown the Plymouth splash screen I have installed and prompted to type in my password to decrypt the disk. After doing so, the boot screen begins to flicker between the arch logo and "starting system 219" at the top left hand of the screen. GDM is never reached (at least graphically). I tried working in the dark and waiting a bit then typing my password as if gdm were displayed and hitting enter. After doing so the flickering stops but it sets on the arch logo from the Plymouth boot screen.

ctrl+alt F2/3/4 etc do nothing.

Any suggestions?

Does downgrading systemd help?

No idea. I cannot even get to a shell prompt. I will be booting into an arch USB live environment to further diagnose. Will report back here soon.

Re: [SOLVED] Plymouth 0.9.2-2 prevents GDM/KDM from loading; flickers.

Hello everyone. I found the issue!

It turns out it was NOT systemd but plymouth (I think). I installed the latest plymouth via yaourt and after disabling plymouth the system would boot fine. After more digging it turns out the latest plymouth version (0.9.2-2) does NOT supply plymouth-gdm.service, so I went back to the regular gdm.service. After doing so plymouth works and the system loads just fine.

jmanes@thinkpad-x200 [~]$ sudo systemctl enable plymouth-gdm
Failed to execute operation: No such file or directory
jmanes@thinkpad-x200 [~]$ pacman -Qs plymouth
local/plymouth 0.9.2-2
A graphical boot splash screen with kernel mode-setting support
local/plymouth-theme-arch-logo 0.1-2
    Arch-logo is a remake of ubuntu-logo plymouth
jmanes@thinkpad-x200 [~]$

I'm going to head over to the wiki and add this info.

Scratch that. The service is gdm-plymouth not plymouth-gdm. I'm going to re-enable gdm-plymouth and see if it breaks again. Will report back.

OK. So it turns out gdm-plymouth is still in place, but no longer works properly. When gdm-plymouth is enabled via systemctl you get a flickering after the boot process and GDM does not load. Something is broken in this respect.

Enabling gdm.service instead fixes the issue. Hopefully this gets resolved as it seems to be a bug in plymouth 0.9.2-2.
