It seems that the airvpn wiki is out of date. Does anyone know how to setup the new file (airvpn_linux_x64_portable.tar.gz) to have a working airvpn client?

Openvpn will work. There is nothing beyond that to install to use a vpn, airvpn or otherwise.

I use another VPN, but I guess it might be the same for AirVPN (so hope this helps). Why not configuring AirVPN through NetworkManager? (After installing openvpn and networkmanager-openvpn). I find the GUI of NetworkManager way easier to use my VPN connections.

Openvpn is very easy to use. Just download a config file from your vpn provider and read the wiki page on openvpn. Easy.
