C$ instead of Ä

Hi!

I'm really desperate. Somehow I managed to misconfigure my system and just don't know how this happended or where to look next. My problem: Umlauts don't work if I'm typing in a terminal. My observations:
  - I get "C$" insetad of "ä" and "C6" instead of "ö" - just two examples
  - the problem exists in vconsole and gnome-terminal
  - everything is fine (get all umlauts) if I sudo -i to root
  - everything is fine (get all umlauts) while using tools like vim oder elinks
  - I compared the environment (env) of root and my user, didn't notice any relevant differences

So, dear Arch users, any idea what causes this behaviour? Any idea what to try next?

Re: C$ instead of Ä

What keymap are you using? How have you configured it?

Re: C$ instead of Ä

from vconsole.conf:
KEYMAP=de-latin1-nodeadkeys

But if it is a keymap problem, why do the umlauts work in vi?
